Douglas County Sheriff's Office and CoCoMoes raise $8,849 for Special Olympics
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/17/2020 - 10:17amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) teamed up with CoCoMoes Qnique Eats on September 11 to raise money for Special Olympics through a Tip-A-Cop event. They raised $8,849 to help benefit the Douglas County Special Olympics chapter.
“We want to thank CoCoMoes for going above and beyond to provide the take-out option at this year’s event,” said Scott Turek of Special Olympics Nevada. “This option allowed us to still host the event with COVID restrictions in place and the athletes were able to pair with DCSO to provide a safe and fun event.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/14/2019 - 9:48pmFor the second day in a row, a Deceuninck – Quick-Step cyclist claimed his first WorldTour stage win at the Amgen Tour of California, with 23-year-old French rider Rémi Cavagna spending hours on a solo ride several minutes ahead of the peloton.
About an hour into the race day, a breakaway including the USA Cycling National Team’s reigning U.S. U23 National Champion Alex Hoehn (Lenexa, Kansas) and Cavagna (FRA) built their lead to over 10 minutes and ended up spending 100 miles out front of the peloton.

Maddie Bowman, a South Tahoe High grad, has won an Olympic gold medal and seven X Games medals. She burst onto the ski halfpipe scene in 2012, and into the history books two years later by winning the first Olympic gold medal in women’s halfpipe skiing. She has now been on the Pro Halfpipe-Freeskiing team for seven years.

South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson will be one of the dancing athletes according to Us Weekly and CBS Sports.
She'll be joining Olympians Tonya Harding, Adam Rippon and Jennie Finch. The rest of the athletes on the show which starts April 30 will be announced next Friday.

As the top American woman on the podium, Anderson qualified for her second Olympic Winter Games and earned the chance to defend her title in PyeongChang in February. She will also be able to add a medal in another event as all slopestyle riders will also compete in big air as it makes its Olympic debut.

Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/27/2017 - 8:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.
Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.

If and when there is a Loop Road Plan, there will be components that will need the city’s approval. The two biggies will be accepting the old Hwy 50 as a city street and using eminent domain to tear down many houses. The point here is that the city will be making decisions. Measure T is about who will be making those decisions: A majority of city council, i.e. 3 people, or 9000 voters.

In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

It's been 55 years since the Barton family donated the land where the first hospital in South Lake Tahoe was built, and it was in that same footprint of land that the ground was broken for the new center 26,000 square foot center on Tuesday.

South Tahoe High's varsity basketball teams won Wednesday night in Sparks. The boys beat the Railroaders 77-63 while the girls handled their opponent, winning the game by a score of 54-34.

Even though Mancuso was name to the team she will miss out on the season due to hip surgery, but has her sights set on the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang.

The list of the 95 participants released resemble the 'A List' of who's who in sports and entertainment, as well as the military. They will all be going after a prize purse of $625,000.

The 23-year old won the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships with a Left-side 1260 tail; Right-side 1080 tail; Switch 720 opposite safety; Right-side 900 high mute; Right-side 900 truck driver.

Sierra-at-Tahoe gets 21" of snow to start off Sierra Solstice Celebration

The official first day of winter starts on Sunday, December 21 but Sierra-at-Tahoe got a head start with live music and a tree lighting ceremony.

A crowd of a few hundred people gathered at Echo Summit for "Return to the Summit" which honored the unique location as well as the unique time and team. There were tumultuous times in 1968 prior to the Olympics with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy as well as the Vietnam War.

The day started with a procession through South Lake Tahoe where people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the gold medalists. The celebration at Sierra Resort consisted of a grand ceremony, proclamations from dignitaries, including California Senator Gaines, and live music. The girls also signed autographs and danced the night away. Thanks to the entire community for coming out to celebrate. Way to go Team Sierra!

Anderson clinched the TTR World Snowboard Tour slopestyle title with her win at the snowy Vail Mountain venue. Canadian Spencer O’Brien took second and Isabel Derungs of Switzerland third in the women’s final. Canada’s Mark McMorris took the victory for the men with Norwegian Stale Sandbech taking second and Candian Max Parrot third.
South Lake Tahoe Celebration, Parade and Party Being Held For Its Three Olympians

South Lake Tahoe, the tight-knit ski community big on Olympic athletes will honor its three USA team members in a city-wide celebration, Saturday, March 15.
Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, who won gold for snowboarding slopestyle and freeskiing halfpipe respectively, and Hannah Teter who placed fourth in snowboarding halfpipe, will be lauded at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.
Updated Lake Tahoe Olympic Medal Count
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2014 - 9:51pmThe medals won by Lake Tahoe athletes grew by one on Thursday, bringing the total to 4. The three gold medals were won by Maddie Bowman, Jamie Anderson and David Wise. Julia Mancuso won bronze.
There are three days left of competition in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. The closing ceremonies will air on NBC Sunday night from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
Olympians from Lake Tahoe Have Higher Medal Count Than Some Countries
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/19/2014 - 12:07amThe gold medals won by Jamie Anderson and David Wise, along with the bronze won by Julia Mancuso have put the Lake Tahoe medal count above those won by Great Britain and Finland, and the same as Australia and Latvia.
Lake Tahoe's medal count can still increase with Maddie Bowman's Freeskiing Halfpipe coming up on Thursday, and the men's Giant Slalom and Slalom on Wednesday and Saturday where Tim Jitloff will try to medal as well.
U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team Nominations Announced
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/21/2014 - 3:45pmThe U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced the nomination of nine moguls and aerials athletes to the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Ski Team. The team will be led by reigning Olympic Champion Hannah Kearney and Olympians Patrick Deneen, Heather McPhie, Emily Cook and Ashley Caldwell. The athletes were nominated based on results on the International Ski Federation World Cup.

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/20/2014 - 12:38pmThere are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.
Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
