Crews from Liberty Utilities have been out all night addressing several issues affecting power to 3,455 of the utility company's customers.

A heavy snow and winds have been wreaking havoc on Lake Tahoe trees and power lines.

It isn't one incident but eight incidents that are causing the power outage to Meyers, Tahoma, Emerald Bay and Glenshire areas. Trees heavy with snow have been knocked onto the lines.

According to Kathy Carter, spokesperson for Liberty Utilities, the crews have had to walk the length of lines, looking for issues instead of being able to pinpoint one area of cause.

There is no estimate on repair times yet since the outages are scattered throughout the west shore and some of SLT and Meyers, but Carter said neighborhoods will be restored one at a time.

Some customers in Placer County are also affected, with 27 different incidents causing power to go out for 182 customers.

Liberty Utilities will be updating their website until all power is restored. More information can be found, including an emergency outage map, at www.libertyutilities.com.

Here are steps you can take to reduce damage and discomfort during an outage:

If the power goes off during cold weather, keep all doors closed to keep the heat inside. Have your family dress warmly and stay together in the same room or area.

Even in very cold weather, the house will stay comfortable for several hours.

Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible. The contents should be good for many hours if the door is kept closed.

Turn off all appliances, including computers and peripherals, especially those that generate heat. This helps prevent hazards or damage when service is restored.

Turn off all lights except one inside your home/business and one outside. The
inside light lets you see and the outside light lets Liberty Utilities’ crews know when the power is back on.

When power has been restored, please conserve electricity in the first hours to
prevent further outages on your lines. Bring up the temperature in one room of the house or in one heating zone, if you have electric space heating. We ask that you not use electric stoves and clothes dryers in the first hour after restoration.

Liberty Utilities also appreciates customers calling in their outage at 1-800-782-2506 as that helps us pinpoint where the outage is occurring.
