What to do in Lake Tahoe When There Isn't Much Snow? Enjoy a Day on the Lake!

With a lack of winter storms in Lake Tahoe and the usual snow that accompanies them, visitors are looking for things to enjoy during their visit.

The calm water and mild days have been perfect for fishing, whether its boat fishing on Lake Tahoe or ice fishing on the frozen lakes in the area.

I ran into a group of fisherman just ending their venture onto the lake with Tahoe Sport Fishing on Tuesday. The group of men were from Australia, South Africa, Los Angeles and Sacramento and by the looks of their smiles and their catch, they had a great time.

Bobby and Caesar, who took the fishermen out, said they have seen a big increase of business this winter because of the fair weather. They told me that most of their clients are tourists but they do see a lot of locals and repeat customers.

Most of the fish being caught are Mackinaw Lake Trout from 2 to 5 lbs each.

Tahoe Sport Fishing has two trips a day, one at 8 am and the other at 1 pm. Cost is $118 per person for the early cruise, $106 for the afternoon trip.

Ice fishing has been very popular on Red Lake and Caples Lake according to Jeff, the manager of the Sportsman in South Lake Tahoe. He said that while their ski and sled rental business has been very slow, the tackle and fishing portion has been pretty good.

They rent and sell ice augers as well as all needed fishing supplies. Jeff said that kids have also been having fun ice fishing on Sawmill Pond.

Not into fishing but love the water? Ski Run Boat Company is renting boats this winter for the first time. Office Manager Carey Acuna said they considered renting boats out last winter but never tried it, but this year's inaugural winter has proven to be a good decision. According to Acuna there have been a few rentals each day, especially since their boats are one of the few ways people can enjoy going into Emerald Bay due to the low water level.

Boats can be rented from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
