Memorial Day weekend fishing report for Northern California and Sierra

Here is the Memorial Day weekend fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of May 22-28. Pack plenty of sunscreen, fill your cooler full of cold beverages and enjoy the long holiday weekend.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Not much has changed since last week. Water conditions have stabilized and are somewhere around 50 degrees which, when coupled with the abundance of aquatic spring hatches, has made a great time fishing for Salmon, Bows, and Browns. There have been occasional wind gusts, but most fishermen report catching a fair amount.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Lake Sabrina - Bishop Creek:
Mother Nature is still in the news at the Lake – looks like we may have gotten a few more flurries in the backcountry –looked like it dumping up there – but it sure looks like it is melting fast.
Should have some good weather for you all down in Bishop for Mule Days.
Yup, that’s this weekend.
Catching continues to be great with lots of limits coming out of the Lake. During midday, bait fishing (Power Bait, Salmon Eggs & Nightcrawlers) is doing a bit better than lure fishing (Red & Gold Thomas Buoyants, Super Dupers or Kastmasters). Lures are working in the morning and evenings.

Four-wheeling to that back Lake is getting a more & more challenging. Southern California Edison completed the work on the dam that took the Lake down and the additional Edison work needed can be completed with water on the dam – unfortunately, there are other forces at work that may keep the Lake down for a bit longer.

One of the more amusing stories we heard about why the Lake is so low was pretty darn entertaining – “They piled up all the rocks in the bottom of the Lake to stop the creek and those cars down there are the workers.”
Still a little on the cool side up at the Lake – it’s gonna be a bit on the breezy side Tuesday & Wednesday with temps in the low 60s with the lows in the low 30s – but it might seem a bit cooler with that breeze.
Thursday looks like the temps may dip into the low 50s, but come back up for the Mule Days Weekend.
You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.

Looks like all the campgrounds should be up and running for the Mule Days Weekend.
Don’t forget the BUG JUICE -the skeeters are out and they are BIG – we’re hoping this cold weather will eradicate the big ones so we can get to the little ones and then none at all – Remember when using the bug juice and SANITIZER you need to really wash your hands before fishing - then rub some Salmon Egg juice, worm dirt or Anglers Bros Trout attractant to take that smell off. Also, remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen.
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing is serving Breakfast from 7:00am to 11:00am and Lunch until 4:00pm every day of the week.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parchers Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake:
Fishing remains consistent at the lake with shore anglers finding a steady pick on pan sized Rainbows to 12". Only 3 fish in the four to six pound range have been weighed in this season but that isn't too shabby considering the light fishing pressure of the early season.
Lure tossers are scoring on the usual suspects, Thomas Buoyant, Kastmasters and the like.
Bait dunkers are doing well using various Power baits fished off the bottom and with Nightcrawlers fished 5 feet under a bobber.
Those who prefer soft plastics are scoring on jigs, trout worm and swimbaits with pink, orange and grasshopper producing the best.
The rainbows are in full spawn mode right now so anglers are encouraged to practice catch and release whenever possible.
Access is still a little difficult along the west shore and the rock slide with boulder hopping required to access this area.
Boiler Cove offers the best shore access.
The lake level is very low but steadily coming up.
South Lake Landing is hoping to begin weekend operations in early June with a limited boat and kayak fleet, with expanded operation as soon as the water level allows.
As expected, the lake is coming up fast with the great warm weather and we  hope this continues.
South Fork Bishop Creek:
Creek flows are pretty much perfect on the So. Fork right now and anglers are reporting solid fishing in areas where the DFG stocks, namely the campgrounds and creek crossings.
Weir Pond:
A solid 2+ lb Rainbow was reportedly caught at the Weir this week, a truly fun fish to fight in that pond. Most folks are finding a mix of stocker Rainbows, Brookies and an occasional Brownie mixed in.
Intake II:
Intake II was reported to be a bit on the slow side for shore anglers week, even for the dough dunkers.
North Lake:
Mixed reports from North Lake this week with some anglers reporting wide open action and some not doing well at all.
The anglers doing best were fishing lures on 4lb test.
Trail Report:
Long Lake is now 75 percent ice free and the trail to the lake is almost clear.
Green Lake, Brown Lake and Tyee Lakes are all open and accessible with little or no snow on the trail.
Spring conditions have given way to very summer-like conditions. Hike on!

BLUE LAKES, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
Closed until the second Saturday in June 2013.

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Boca is filling up and fishing here has been pretty good.
Best action by shore fisherman has been the dam and at the deeper troughs outside the inlet.
Lake is at its winter level so boaters are launching from the east side of the lake.  Those who are able to launch should concentrate their efforts about 50-70 off the dam with kokanee (yes, kokanee) imitations as this is what the large browns are feeding on.
Also, concentrate off points as large fish will be suspended here.
Shore fisherman can be successful by throwing all sorts of bait and lures such as large spinners and small stick baits that will imitate kokanee, rainbows, or baitfish.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707)
(www.kenssport.com) reports:
Bridgeport has picked up very nicely the past few days, trolling and bait fishing have been excellent.
Trolling with rapalas, needlefish, blades/crawlers and various other spoons has been good and bait anglers have been doing well with crawlers, power bait and power eggs.
Lots of fish in the 1 to 4 pound range are being caught, mostly rainbows but there's still a few nice browns showing up.

CARSON RIVER, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Current flow is 759+ CFS.  Not much has changed since the last report.  The only report change is the clarity of the Carson has improved.  The following report will stay the same for the next couple of weeks.
Fishing will be off and on with the ongoing snow melt. Look for increased flows in the next couple of weeks. The flows above 500 CFS on the Carson make conditions for fishing difficult and wading dangerous.
The Carson run off this year should not last long so look forward to good fishing in late May and early June.
The Carson City area was last stocked on April 11.
Same methods of fishing should be applied this time of year.
Lure fisherman should try Kastmasters and Blue fox lures.
Salmon eggs drifted works well this time of year.
Fly anglers try prince nymphs, gold ribbed hares ear and yellow stones.

CATNIP RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Closed until the second Saturday in June 2013.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Closed until May 25 trout opener.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlake.com) reports:
Good day Convict Lake fishing report followers!
Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner. It's the perfect time to relax out on the lake and wet a line.
This week the fishing really heated up. There was no shortage of 4 pound plus fish coming out of the lake this week.
Catch of the Week:
The largest fish caught this week was a 5 pound 13 ounce rainbow caught by Jason Web from Yorba Linda, CA. Jason was using night crawlers and was fishing at the North Shore.

Other Notable catches this week:
Ginger Chenier of Sherman Oaks, CA landed a pair of nice rainbows. The fish were 3 pounds 6 ounces and 2 pounds 4 ounces respectfully. Ginger was using night crawlers and was fishing at the North Shore.
Frank Gallegos of Perris, CA landed a nice 4 pound 2 ounce rainbow.
Frank was using Garlic Power Bait and was fishing at the South Shore.
The second largest fish caught this week was a 5 pound 6 ounce rainbow caught by Cathleen using Power Bait.
Cathleen was fishing along the South Shore.
Tactics/Bait:
Inflated night crawlers, garlic and yellow Power Bait had the most success this week out on the lake. Red/gold Thomas Bouyants, green Rostertails and Powerbait Mice Tails were also very productive this week.
The hot spots where the South and North Shores. Other locations to try are the Outlet, West Shore, Creek, Jetty, Handicap Pier and Hangman's Tree.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Trout Teasers, green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Thomas Bouyants, Green Wooly Booger and Lip RIpperz Hatchery Dust on Power Bait.

Derby News:
Round-up at the Lake Fishing Derby is in full swing. Don't miss the chance to win $6,000 in Resort Prizes! Also mark your calendars for the Hangman's Cash Bonus Weekend on June 7-9. $2000 in cash prizes.
Weather:
It wasn't as wet this week put we still experienced a few showers. The temperature in Convict Canyon hovered in the low 60's during the day. The lows were around 30 with moderate wind a few afternoons. The forecast for the beginning of next week has the temperature getting back up to high 60's with sunny skies. Here is the National Weather Service link that is usually quite accurate: 7-Day Forecast Convict Lake.
Stocking:
DFG stocked on Wednesday, May 15th.
Alpers stocked on Tuesday, May 14th.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Sandy Point has been the hot spot lately. The fish have moved up to 12-14 feet of water. Gray/black Stevies Wonder getting lots of grabs.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Water temp: 52-56F on the bottom. Water is still very clear.
 WARNING-
The lake is much lower than previous years.
Watch out for Pelican Point which sticks out way into the lake.
If you leave the marina and head straight for McGee Bay, you will run aground! Look for white buoys and pass to the east.
Fishing conditions:
Excellent. Great hatches continue.
Pelican point, North Landing Bay and off Alligator Point are all on one day and just okay the next but Sandy is pretty much excellent all along the east side of the underwater bank that extends way out.
Those fishing 12-14 ft down off the side of the bank are killing it as the fish patrol up and back. Almost as many Browns and Cutthroats as Rainbows with a big, fat Perch thrown in a couple of times a day.
Next grab could be any species and an size from 12" to 24".
Super clear water still and your flies need to match the real thing - olive, gray/black and black after 10 am.
A little red in there earlier in the deeper water.
Bite starts early on these warm days.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Don Rotsma of Fly Fish With Don (775-722-8418) (www.flyfishwithdon.com) reports:
May 14- Fishing has improved greatly!
Had a chance to fish last Friday through yesterday (Monday) and would have to say fishing is now fair to good.
Friday and Saturday were super days with lots of blood midges and a fish working them in the surface in the mornings.
Still caught more fish using intermediate lines (very slow) and larvae imitations, but if you can get a surface pupae or emerger in front of the fish, they will take.
Good news is there are damsel nymphs swimming towards shore in several places and a number of fish are working them! We have not seen any adult damsels yet, but with warm temps should appear soon. We hooked fish on midges and damsels regularly over the weekend. There are lots of callibaetis in the afternoon, but no fish working them that I can see.
Water temps are in the 58 degree range and get warmer during the day. Fish are holding in 5 to 8 ft of water with a lot of fish coming to surface at times.
Try blood midge larvae, pupae, damsels, and other wiggle tailed attractors. I would set up both an intermediate rod and a floating rod to cover the basics.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) report:
Spring Fishing Derby is June 15th this year. Mark your calendar.
Lake level is 81%.
Fishing has been great this weekend.
Trolling North of the big island using Dick Nite Copper Red Head or Needlefish in Red Dot Frog or Fire Tiger
Fly fishing from Eagle Point to Jenkins, we had a blood midge and flying ant hatch this weekend. Assort Nymps, Blood Midge, Ice Cream Cone and Wooly Buggers in Orange.
Bank fishing at Eagle Point, Nightcrawlers, Power bait or Eggs all worked.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Water and weather conditions are perfect for the season and most of the fish have been holding between 5 and 8 feet. There have been a great deal of Callibaetis but not a lot of fish have been going for them.
Overall, Lake Davis is a good choice at the moment.
For best results use wiggle tailed attractors.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
May 14
Donner has been fishing great.
Lots of rainbows being caught along the west end on power bait, salmon eggs, and nightcrawlers. A little patience is needed but the payoff has been worth it.
Macks and some browns have also been caught from shore by large pyramid type spoons, floating and countdown rapalas, and even some by nightcrawlers.  Carolina rigging a Floating Rapala with a large slip sinker and a 12 inch leader was working wonders for one angler who caught both Macks and a couple of browns.
Catching minnows can be deadly this time of year for the Macks as they are within casting distance.
With water temps near 47 degrees the Kokes have started to bite but so far only small ones are grabbing now.
Also, for those trolling for Macks action has been good.
Trolling the usual suspects that will imitate small Kokes and Rainbows will be the top producers.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
At the moment, fishing is fair although some fishermen report a string of good catches. Expect better conditions to come sometime around June. If you are fishing Fall River, the best areas currently are above Island Drive.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The river is flowing nicely and there are strippers all up and down the water from Shanghai Falls. Shads are also appearing in small amounts.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Don Rotsma of Fly Fish With Don (775-722-8418) (www.flyfishwithdon.comn) reports:
May 14- Fishing reports were excellent this last weekend.
Got an email from an angler who caught over 30 fish near Snalligaster on the west side last Saturday. Midges and attractors.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Fishing at Frenchman Lake has been great this past week.
Bill and Stella McGuirk from Cold Springs, NV limited out at Spring Creek last Monday evening using worms with a Pautske egg.
Their fish measured 14 to 16 inches each.
Jason from Chester, age 11, caught his first fish at the Frenchman boat ramp using a Needlefish lure.
The fish weighed 1 ½ pounds and was 16 inches long.
On 05/14/13, Sakamoto and Yuki Paul each caught their limit at Crystal Point using rainbow power bait. Their biggest fish weighed about 2lbs.
We have also heard that fishing between Spring Creek and Big Cove has been good. Some catch and release fishermen reported catching 9 rainbows in that area - each fish about 16 inches.
Camping and fishing at Frenchman Lake is a great way to spend the Memorial Day weekend. Stop in and see us for all of your camping and fishing needs or call for updates (530) 993-4683.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Despite the shifting weather conditions currently, fishing on the lake has produced good catches from boat and the shore. Once again, lots of fishermen report using nightcrawlers and powerbait for the best results.
For stream fishing, it is advised to use Panther Martin lures.
Courtesy of The Wiggins Trading Post.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Given how early it is in the season, fishing has only been alright to fair.
As the season continues and when more hatches happen, expect better reports to come in.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
May 16
Fishing should be outstanding with the warmer temperatures. Fish the weed grass line on the edge for best results.
Best fly patterns are water boatman and snail patterns. Copper Johns and prince nymphs are recommended as well. Only artificial lures and single barbless hooks for this water. The limit on Hobart is five fish only one over 14 inches.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is  28 CFS. Runoff seems to have peaked and flows have lowered. Scuds, San Juan worms and copper johns.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.thetroutfitter.com" www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Clear depending on the weather. Because of the afternoon rain storms water slowly turning chocolate milk color.
Flows at 45 CFS as of 5/15.
Fishing conditions:
Still Great! Hatches happening pretty much all day.
There has been a massive caddis hatch in the evening!!!

JACKSON MEADOWS RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
May 14
You can now get into Jackson Meadows and reports that are coming out is that the lake is full and the fishing is great!
Anglers here are doing great throwing power bait and small lures such as 1/8 oz Kastmasters, Panther Martins and Roostertails.
For the trolling crowd the action has been the Northwest corner of the lake where the creek flows in.  Other areas have been off drop offs into deeper water.  Needlefish, Dick Nites, Kastmasters, and Sierra Spinners tipped with a Nightcrawler always works well.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Silver Lake. still seems to be the best for float tube fly rodders fishing black or purple woolly buggers on full sink lines doing well.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
May 19, 2013.
We've only had a few reports from Kirman this week and they were similar to last week, not a ton of fish but some nice ones. The anglers we've spoken to have been able to get into 2 or 3 fish each, brookies up to around 18" and cutts up to about 22".
Streamers seem to be the best bet lately, seal buggers, stillwater nymphs, wooly buggers, soft hackles and ap emergers have been the best producers.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Great fishing! Bring plenty of salmon fly dries and you’ll be bringing in plenty of smaller Steelhead as well as some 16” Steelhead.
River conditions are, for the most part, excellent even if the flow is a bit high. Great choice for a leisurely day-trip.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
May 16
Anglers have reported good bass fishing. Try using bass plugs near the banks where there is structure such as rocky areas and brush. Bass are on the spawn so work the areas near the drop offs.
Walleye fishing has slowed down but beach areas are still producing some results.  Best methods for walleye have been worms trolled in a worm harness behind flashers and live minnows.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Most rainbows caught have been somewhere between 14” and 16”, but there are reports of some as big as 20”! So fishing has been fantastic!
Most of the catches have been done by Woolly Buggers.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Water is begining to warm up  and fishing is improving.
Twin Lakes has been best for fly rodders.
Try Doc's Twin Lakes Special in black or olive on a sink tip line.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Water conditions:
Basin Lakes are thawed out! Mary and George are fishable from shore.
Fishing conditions:
Since the weather has turned cold and rainy, not many bugs are going off on the lake. Nymphing midges and pulling streamers are the best technique.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:
Closed until July 15, 2013.

MARTIS LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, and lingcod is now closed outside of the 30 fathom curve until Sept. 30.
The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two).
Retention of cabezon is not allowed until July 1 due to a small harvest cap. Fishing for ling cod has been very good for anglers when the ocean has been calm. Anglers are also having good success catching limits of black rockfish in the Coos Bay/Bandon area.
Recreational chinook salmon fishing is open in the ocean from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mt. from March 15 through April 30. All chinook caught in the ocean must be 24 inches or longer. Fishing for chinook salmon in the Coos Bay/Bandon area has been good this past week.
Anglers are reporting good catches of surf perch along the beaches from Bandon to Coos Bay.  Sand shrimp or sand worms are always great baits to use for surf perch fishing.  Fishing is usually best on the incoming tide.
The next All-depth halibut fishing days are May 16-18.
The Nearshore halibut season began on May 2 but is open only on Thursdays through Saturdays each week until the quota is met (23,038 lbs) or Oct. 31.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Action remains steady at Lake Oroville for bass at around 30 feet using jigs, shaky head, dart head and drop shot worms. The water level has been dropped but that has not affected the bite whatsoever.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Current flow is 114 CFS. Some larger spawning fish near the mouth. Section above the bridge is still slow.
The section from the bridge to the monument is closed until Memorial day.
Try egg patterns, San Juan worms ,Prince nymphs and copper John's.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow is 265 CFS and is due to increase to 300 CFS by mid week.
Fishing is good.
Caddis hatch is unpredictable. Red  jujube midge, small Stevie's Wonders in black and grey  or olive  and grey WD-40's. Baetis hatch midday but not much surface action.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Water conditions:
Good. 120 CFS as of 5/15.
Fishing conditions:
Fair to Good. Once again the water is little off color due to rain in the area.
Above the confluence of HC(Hot Creek) the water is clear. Better chances with dry flies.
Below the confluence the water is dirty and dark. Better chances nymphing.
Lower Owens River:
Water conditions:
Good. Flows are at 245 CFS as of 5/15.
Finally the water has settled from the blowout of the Gorge.
Fishing conditions:
Same ol same ol,....until DWP is done with the middle power plant, the flows will stay around the 245 level, making the fishing consistent. Although, it can change by the time I'm done typing this...
Owens River Gorge:
Water conditions:
Great Flow: 175 CFS. This is a an abnormal flow for the gorge, which usually runs at 45 CFS.
It's been flowing at this level for a while. Silt should've settled.
Fishing conditions:
Because of maintenance by DWP, the water is higher than usual.
Water level can change any moment without any notice.
Pleasant Valley Reservoir:
Water conditions:
Water level is low!
Fishing conditions:
Water is still cold so the rule of thumb is "Deep dark and slow"
The area right below the stream section continues to be the hot spot.
Rock Creek:
Water conditions:
72 CFS as of 5/15. Crystal Clear!!
Fishing conditions:
The flows are going up every week making dry fly fishing a little challenging. Nymphing is the preferred technique.
Rush Creek:
Water conditions:
Good. 117 CFS as of 5/15 in between Silver Lake and Grant Lake.
33 CFS as of 5/15 below Grant Lake and Hwy 395.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The Pit River has been an on/off river with some portions having good results and others only fair. Spring runoff has made conditions difficult, but you should expect the entire river to become a more viable fishing option in the coming weeks. If you know the Pit then you should be fine, but if you are inexperienced it is advised to not go on it currently.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
May 14
From the dam down to the section where the two inlets meet fishing has been pretty good.  Nice trout in the 14 to 18 inch range have been caught on Kastmasters in 1/4 oz to 1/8 oz in Perch, Watermelon, Brook trout, and Gold early and late while Firetiger, Chrome/Blue, and Chrome have produced better during the mid day hours. Look for similar colors in Roostertails, Panther Martins, and Thomas Bouyants.
For those who have more patience than me throwing nightcrawlers, Power bait, or Salmon eggs will certainly be a sure bet when the schools come by.
Trollers should concentrate along drop offs by the shoreline and through the Prosser Creek arm with needlefish, Dick Nites, and Sierra Spinner (that just not for Kokes!) tipped with a nightcrawler.

RYE PATCH RESERVOIR, PERSHING COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
May 16
Some nice wipers have been caught in the area around the dam.
Anglers are using chartreuse colored swivel baits before the heat of the day sets in and taking fish in the three to four pound range.  Anglers below the dam are using similar lures to catch walleyes and wipers.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
With improved conditions the Lower Sac is once again a great place to go fishing and relax with friends and family. A highly recommended option if other streams and lakes are not producing the results you like.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Morning fishing has still had the best results, especially up in the Dunsmuir area. Expect the bites to die off around mid-day.
Using Mercer's Golden Stone Flush Floater in the late day can sometimes produce fair to good catches.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:

Striped Bass fishing:
May 20, 2013
Striped bass fishing in the Sacramento River Colusa area is fair to good.
Every day has been different, getting a little tougher this week, with temperature changes and over cast weather.
A great fighting fish, using spinning gear and live bait.

SAN JOAQUIN/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Road closed.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing as, for the most part, has been great! Best results are coming in from the Dry Creek area. Hummdingers and  Wiggle Hoochies have been good at reaching the lower depth salmon who drop down during the mid-day. Shoreline bass fishing has improved as well, and should improve even more as the weather warms even more.

60- 80  feet deep. The Dry Creek area, using Cripp Lures and Wiggle Hoochies. Lake Shasta is place to be for lots of action and great trout fishing & salmon fishing.
Bass fishing continues to be great!

SMITH RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
This is the time that anglers also target striped bass in the tide waters.
As the weather warms the bass should get more active in feeding as they prepare for spawning.
Trout season will open in the Smith River basin on May 25.

SPOONER LAKE, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
May 16
No New Reports - Anglers have reported good fishing with power bait in green and orange. The weed bed continues to be a problem around Spooner Lake. If anglers do find an opening they should have some success.
A water craft such as a float tube or kayak is the key to unlocking this lake’s hold on fishing.
Fly anglers have had luck using black, brown, and green Wooly Buggers. For fly anglers, a floating line this time of year is all you need.
Later in the year anglers will need to transition to an intermediate line for deeper presentation.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
May 14
Boat launch is wide open.
Word is out here now and a lot of Macks are being caught as they are in full on feed mode. Fishing around the island has been the hot spot in 10-20 feet of water before first light. Also, off the dam in 10-20 feet of water has seen some action.
As the light hits the water start fishing for the Macks around drop offs and then start looking for them later suspended in deeper water.
Kokanee fishing has started here, not red hot mind you, but look for them just outside the Little Truckee Arm, Sagehen Arm and the point around these two areas. Top lining in some really shallow water will bring results with a variety of Kokanee lures now. Get out early!
For the shore fisherman spoons, large Spinners, and stick baits will work and of course if you're throwing bait nothing beats an inflated nightcrawler drenched in your favorite scent.
Action here has been better for the boater, but recent reports have indicated that shore fishing has picked up.

LAKE TAHOE:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Line Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fish tightlines.com) report:
We have been on Tahoe the last couple days. Yesterday, we found the bite off Cal Neva Point to be a little slower than it’s been in the last couple weeks. We ended up finding a better bite off Dollar Point. Still nothing special but we got our fish.
Today, we had a group of 8 from Idaho. We launched at Cave Rock and headed north a couple miles and found good action in 170 to 200’ of water.
All our fish both days were caught on Spoons fishing right on the bottom.
Thanks to Brad Bugica for helping out today with the group of eight.
Everyone had a great time and took home plenty of fish for dinner.

LAKE TAHOE:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No New Reports. Weather for the upcoming 10-day forecast is outstanding and the Mackinaw fishing should continue to be as great as the weather.
Fish have started to transition to the deeper water.
Anglers have been concentrating their efforts anywhere from 80 to 150 feet.
Top lining still has been producing brown trout and rainbow near any structure type areas. While top lining, try using minnow plugs and spoons and make sure to change up often. The fish can be very selective this time of year. Mackinaw fishing white dodgers trailing minnows is still a very effective method.

TOPAZ LAKE:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing is starting to slow down. The lake is going down and the bass are starting to transition to deep water. Fishing will slow down after the spawn.
The trout fishing will continue to slow down as the boating activity increases. Boat anglers should try using Rapalas and nightcrawlers behind dodgers. Shore fishermen should try Power Bait, Power Eggs, salmon eggs, and nightcrawlers

TRINITY LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
No current fishing report, however good news: March through June are the favorite months for experienced bass anglers there. The lake has good populations of both largemouth and smallmouth bass. It also holds the California record for small mouth bass!
A dredger piles at the head of the lake, as well as other structures found in the coves and points throughout the lake provide excellent bass fishing for most of the year. Spring always provides the hottest action, as both species move into the shoreline to spawn.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
With higher flows making fishing difficult, do not expect great results to come out of Trinity right now. Fishing here is not advised and better conditions should come later in the summer season.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
May 20, 2013
Currently, Water is at 2,129 CFS.
Trinity River will slowly decreasing to 1700 CFS by May 2 th.
Trinity River Steelhead fishing has slowed now, we focus on the Sacramento River for the next month.
Spring run salmon will start to show up come May and June.
In the meantime we will focus on nice, large Rainbows on the Sac River in Redding to Anderson.
Trinity River fishing is conveniently located 40 minutes West of Redding, CA  fishing from the town of Weaverville, California.

TRUCKEE RIVER, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The Truckee's current flow in Reno is + 697 CFS. Stream flow is on the decrease. The Truckee was last stocked on 5/7/13 with 4,428 rainbow trout.
Fishing will continue be difficult in the next couple of weeks and wading across or near the river will be hazardous.
Fishing methods are about the same for a couple of weeks.
Fly fisherman try using March Brown imitations and Blue Winged Olive May fly’s. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of streamers this time of year. Try sculpin and crayfish patterns for best streamer patterns.
For traditional anglers this time of year floating salmon eggs, Power Bait and imitating bait fish work well.
Fly anglers should concentrate on nymph fishing and streamers.

TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF:
Don Rotsma of Fly Fish With Don (775-722-8418) (www.flyfishwithdon.comn) reports:
May 8 - River has been fishing great with March Brown hatches and lots of nymph action. Friend Doug Oulette has been posting some outstanding guide client photos and is having a banner year.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
Judy Allen at Annett's Mono Village (760- 932-7071) (www.monovillage.com) reports:

We continued to see good size fish caught this week.
Twelve (12) year old Thomas Mellum from Carson City landed a 4 pound 14 ounce rainbow using  Fluorescent Orange Nuggets.
Jim Brandt brought in a 3 pound 14 ounce rainbow using a Thomas Buoyant Watermelon lure.
Barrett and Darrell Baldwin, a father and son team from Orange County caught 2 nice rainbow, with weights of 4 pounds and 2 1/2 pounds.

The water is at 49 degrees.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
May 19, 2013.
The Twins have settled down this week on the huge fish but now there seems to be a good number of 1 to 5 pound fish being caught.
Bait fishing with crawlers and power bait either from shore or boats has been good, also trolling or casting lures are producing some nice fish as well.
Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters have all been doing well.
Good numbers of fish from 1 to 3 pounds are being caught with a few weighing in at just over 5 pounds.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
May 19, 2013.
The Virginias are ice free now and the fishing is excellent!
Bait fishing with power bait or night crawlers has been good, casting lures like kastmasters or thomas bouyants has also been good.
Fly anglers strippng buggers or matukas with a soft hackle trailer have also been having good success.
The weather has been great and the scenery is great as well!
The resort is scheduled to open this coming Friday as well.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No new updates. No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lakes since 2009.
Launching is not possible right now.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker River:
The East is back down to 98 CFS today after running at 120 CFS for most of the week. Fishing is still pretty good on both the California and Nevada sides of the river.
Nymphing has been the best bet lately though the caddis have stated to hatch out pretty good so there should be some good dry fly action in the evenings.
Go to patterns include: flashback emerger, micro mayfly, zebra midge, san juan worm, rainbow warrior, silver streak, blood midge, buckskin caddis, fox's poopah, lafontaine deep sparkle pupa, dark lord, copper john, z-wing caddis, nori's caddis.
Sceirine Ranch:
May 19, 2013.
Most days have been pretty good on the ranch with just a couple exceptions this week. There's still a few stoneflies coming off on the ranch as well. The same patterns are working well on the ranch as on the Cali side of the EW plus you can try some streamers like zuddlers or moal leeches, also a dead drift crayfish is a good bet down there.
Hunewill Pond:
May 19, 2013.
We've had clients on the pond every day this week and with the exception of one day when the weather was crappy all have done very well!
Some days the fish have been liking dry flies, some days streamers and some days small midges. On the pond you'll want to be prepared for all situations, that way you'll be sure to get into some nice fish.
Patterns to be packing include: soft hackles, stillwater nymphs, seal buggers, goat leeches, mini leeches, parachute adams, blue wing olives, rojo midges, zebra midges, ap emergers, flashback emergers.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow has been up and down and is currently 98 CFS.
Fishing is  improving with the higher flow.
Midge patterns ,baetis emergers and pheasant tails.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Flows up to 117 CFS as of 5/15.
Fishing conditions:
Flows are UP!!!! Every week the flows have been going up.
So depending on timing, it can be really good.
FYI - Fishing can be slow on days when the flows change.

WALKER RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
May 19, 2013.
The West is getting a little run-off the last couple days so it may be a bit off color for parts of the days. If you search out the back eddy's and softer water you can drift some bait through those pockets and get into some fish, or run a spinner like a Panther Martin through those same areas for some success.

WHISKEYTOWN LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The fishing conditions has been improving, producing Kokes around twelve inches, indicating even better-sized fish as the summer months go on.
Expect more reports as the summer months continue.
