Cannabis ordinance and pay raises on SLT City Council agenda Tuesday

With the Cannabis urgency moratorium expiring on January 25, the South Lake Tahoe City Council will has two items on their Tuesday agenda to address the sales of adult-use marijuana.

Since the moratorium was approved by the Council on December 12, 2018 there have been five meetings of the ad-hoc subcommittee and other studies to help create a South Lake Tahoe ordinance on cannabis sales. The committee is made up of 15 community members and two councilmembers.

The ordinance will deal with facilities, locations packaging, signage and several other issued surrounding the sales. The subcommittee has reached a consensus on store hours, security and employees, and will meet again on January 25 to discuss public education, enforcement, number and location of dispensaries.

The committee will report on their status Tuesday. The Council will also have a vote on extending the moratorium as the ordinance discussion continues to ensure it hits all points outlined by the State of California and addresses community concerns.

Among other items on the agenda is a vote on pay raises those employees represented by Stationary Engineers (Local 39) for South Lake Tahoe Administrative and employees represented by the South Lake Tahoe Police Officer's Association. The vote and discussion will follow on South Tahoe Now Tuesday, but it looks like the annual cost of the agreements will cost the City approximately $550,000 at this time, and further negotiations will occur for the future.

Council will also look at wage and benefits for retirees as well as a pay raise for themselves and the City treasurer of five percent. If approved, council members would earn $1.042.97 per month ($49.54 over their current pay), which would be an additional $2972.49 budget item.

City Council meetings start at 9:00 a.m. at the Airport in South Lake Tahoe and can also be seen streamed on their website, www.cityofslt.us.
