Planning Commission denies changes to planned cannabis microbusiness in South Lake Tahoe

On January 14, 2021, the City Planning Commission denied a request from James Street LLC to change the name of the approved operator and extend their deadline to open by six months.

First on the agenda is a possible vote on an update to City Code and the design standards included in it after receiving a grant from the State to do so. There have been public workshops and meetings with contractors and developers, along with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), to get their input on the updates the standards.

New laws taking effect in California January 1, 2021

As a result, in 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom signed the lowest number of laws since 1967, just 372. In comparison, in 2019 there were 870 new laws, 1016 in 2018 and 859 in 2017.
Many of the new laws are centered around COVID-19, addressing systemic racism, employee rights and policing. For a full list, select 2020 here.
South Lake Tahoe City Council starts off the new year with a meeting Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/31/2020 - 4:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will hold their first scheduled meeting of 2021 on Tuesday with discussion and possible vote on new proposals from the the City of South Lake Tahoe response to COVID-19, a summary of the new housing program and near term rental housing strategies, and the 2020 Lake Tahoe Airport Economic Impact Study findings.
The January 5 meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. and can be viewed on Channel 21 or online.
The agenda also includes consent items:
- Emergency Order No. 6 which authorizes cannabis retailers to temporarily operate curbside pickup.

Collin decided to not run after his four-year term as did Laine who finished ten years on the council.
Four arrested after Butane Hash Oil labs found in South Lake Tahoe home
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/16/2020 - 6:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four men were arrested after narcotics detectives from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) executed a search warrant at a South Lake Tahoe home on Thursday, October 15.
Upon arrival, four suspects were detained inside the residence:
Leo Bailey, age 39
Benjamin Bailey, age 36
Randall Bailey, age 57
Michael Patterson, age 30
According to EDSO, Patterson attempted to flee from the residence on foot but surrendered to a Sheriff K9.

Following a presentation on industrial hemp by the Agriculture Department on June 23, the Board of Supervisors requested the formation of an Ad Hoc Hemp Committee to include two members of the Board.
Three vie for the one allowed cannabis retail location in Meyers

Embarc Tahoe has opened its doors and held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday with Mayor Jason Collin, Mayor Pro Tem Tamara Wallace, members of the Embarc Tahoe team and the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.
Owner Christy Wilson moved into what was once Tahoe Teriyaki and has since been several different businesses.

At that time there were 30 sworn male officers who were chosen from a list of more than 400 applicants who wanted to be part of the first police department for the new city. They were tested in Seal Beach, Roseville, and South Lake Tahoe then interviewed in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Originally, no zoning in Meyers qualified for these activities as their Area Plan zoning didn't match up with the approved areas for El Dorado County's legal activities could fit.
Governor outlines guidelines for reopening Nevada with phase one Saturday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/07/2020 - 5:39pmNevada Governor Steve Sisolak has unveiled his plan for the state to reopen under phase one starting May 9, 2020. Outdoor malls, restaurants, hair salons, and barber shops are among those able to reopen with new standards for safety.
"We must stay safe so we can stay open," said Sisolak of the ability to move into phase 2 by the end of May, or sooner.
"The beginning of the reopening of our economy is not the end of the coronavirus," said Sisolak during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "It's still with us, as strong as ever. It will not go away until there's a vaccine."

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.

South Lake Tahoe city manager resigns, takes new position in Big Bear Lake

Rush was sworn in as the City of South Lake Tahoe city manager on December 6, 2018, and will be leaving on January 24, starting in Big Bear Lake on February 3, 2020. Their City Council approved him during their meeting on Monday.
Judge rules that South Lake Tahoe cannabis microbusiness approvals can move forward

The judge ruled on Friday, November 22 that his previous order will not affect microbusinesses, just retail sales, according to South Lake Tahoe City Attorney Heather Stroud who was in Sacramento for the ruling.
Local man files temporary injunction; South Lake Tahoe cannabis permit process on hold

Local business owner John Runnels filed a temporary injunction against the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council and the Development Services Director Kevin Fabino in Superior Court in Sacramento Friday afternoon. That action has put a temporary halt to all cannabis-related permits being processed in the city until a December 20 court date.

Cannabis businesses not allowed under Meyers Area Plan, for now

The Meyers Area Plan does not meet the permitted zones for the retail sales, cultivation, delivery and manufacturing licenses that will be issued.
There are a few locations in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County on the East Slope (Lake Tahoe area) that could fit the requirements between Meyers and South Lake Tahoe and Tahoma.

They are questioning the fairness of the selection process, and one is stating that all three applicants who had the top scores evaluation scores should be disqualified. A third applicant said he is in the process of filing an appeal.

The top applicants are invited to apply for a special public safety license and negotiate a formal development agreement with the City. By fall, three retail permits, two microbusiness permits, and one cultivation permit will be awarded.

South Lake Tahoe receives 21 cannabis business applications
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/10/2019 - 4:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The deadline for people interested in running adult-use cannabis businesses in South Lake Tahoe to turn in their paperwork has passed and 21 applications were received.
The City Council approved a total of two retail, two microbusiness, two cultivators and four manufacturer permits for South Lake Tahoe. That formula changes if the approved microbusinesses don't want to do retail or cultivation.
At the April 5 deadline, the 21 applications received included 18 were for retail, two for microbusinesses and one for cultivation.

During the closed session portion of Tuesday's City Council meeting, the four councilmembers allowed to participate voted unanimously to accept the signed agreement between the City and TWC. Councilmember Cody Bass had to recuse himself from voting since he is the owner and president of TWC.

On March 7, 2019, South Lake Tahoe will have a cannabis ordinance, opening the door to retail sales, cultivation, manufacturing, and lab testing businesses.
South Lake Tahoe City Council on a delayed start Tuesday

City officials said this delayed start will allow attendees to get to the meeting safely.
There are 15 items on the agenda including the final vote on a cannabis use ordinance and first reading on a mobile vending ordinance.
Man arrested after honey oil lab starts house fire in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/23/2019 - 10:23amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A rental home in Meyers was severely damaged in a fire on January 15, 2019, the result of an illegal drug lab according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).
At 3:18 p.m., Lake Valley Fire Protection District responded to the report of a car crashing into a home at the intersection of Tomahawk Lane and Apache Avenue. Upon arrival, they found a structure and vehicle fire and called in South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue for backup.

Two versions of an ordinance were presented but neither passed muster in the eyes of the council and they hope to have one that addresses their issues come before them at their January 15, 2019 meeting.

The councilmembers will officially accept the November 6 election results. Per Elections Code the City Clerk must certify the results of the election to the City Council.
For South Lake Tahoe this means certifying the fact that three councilmembers, Cody Bass, Devin Middlebrook, and Tamara Wallace, won the election along with Sue Blankenship as city clerk, Dave Olivo as city treasurer, and Measure T passed.

The citizen generated Measure T calls for a ban of all vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe except for those in what is called the "tourist core."
Election update: 47 votes separate nays and yeas on South Lake Tahoe Measure T
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/16/2018 - 10:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another round of votes were released Friday, narrowing the gap between yes and no on Measure T once again. The citizen generated measure call for a ban of all vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe except for those in what is called the "tourist core."
49 votes were added to the Measure T count, 19 "for" and 30 "against."
There were approximately 2,600 vote by mail ballots still to count this week for all of El Dorado County which includes provisional ballots and 160 conditionals ballots from South Lake Tahoe.
That leaves about 1,800 left to tally.
South Lake Tahoe's measure to ban vacation home rentals moves closer to passing
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/14/2018 - 10:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Measure T, the South Lake Tahoe ballot measure that proposed a ban on all vacation rentals outside of the tourist core area starting in 2021 is a bit closer to passing.
In the second incremental release of votes counter after Tuesday, November 6, the Yes on T vote is at 3265, with No on T counts at 3207 - less than one percent difference. 267 ballots were tallied in this last release for Measure T.
No on Measure T closes the gap - down by 25 votes as of Friday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/09/2018 - 6:29pmThe gap between the yes and no votes on Measure T in South Lake Tahoe got much smaller, with the measure now passing by just 25 votes. The South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Supervisor results remain the same.
El Dorado County had over 24,000 votes to count after election day, and they have now counted 16,919 of them. 1,655 of those were from the City of South Lake Tahoe and 2,907 for the Area 5 Supervisor district.

Cannabis ordinance up for vote at Thursday's Planning Commission
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/08/2018 - 1:41pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission are expected to vote on the new cannabis ordinance during their meeting on Thursday, November 9 at 3:00 p.m.
The new ordinance will repeal and replace Article X of the City Code.
With what looks a City Council with three new members, the ordinance will most likely go before them during their first meeting on December 11, 2018. If Cody Bass, the president of Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and South Lake Tahoe's medical dispensary, holds on to the third council seat he will have to recuse himself from the discussion and vote.
Over 24,000 ballots yet to be counted in El Dorado County

You'll still have to wait a bit longer.

A power outage caused by a car hitting a power line near Blackwood Avenue caused some excitement for voters but did not delay the count as there are procedures in place for such an incident.
