SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Followers of South Tahoe Now's police log have long known that the number of local auto thefts has been a concern of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) for the last several years, but they are now seeing a disturbing trend with a large spike in the crime over the past year.
In 2018 SLTPD investigated 70 auto thefts, with 60 of them being crimes committed in the city limits. This reflects as 30 percent increase in the thefts in the last two years, 52 percent since 2008.
The good news is the majority of vehicles stolen in South Lake Tahoe are recovered locally and are normally crimes that are easy to prevent.
The South Lake Tahoe stolen vehicles are normally a crime of opportunity, the thieves see a car warming up in a driveway, or keys have been left out in the open in an unlocked car. Rarely are the ignitions compromised, or the windows smashed to gain entry.
IN 2015 there was a three day period where five cars were stolen, three on a single day, along with the theft of four bicycles.
SLTPD has seen other property crimes on the rise too, ever since California voters approved Prop 47 in 2014. The decision to reduce penalties for drug and property crimes has contributed to a jump in car burglaries, shoplifting and other theft throughout the state.
The police recommend seven steps to avoid getting your car stolen:
1. Keep track of your keys
2. Lock your vehicle
3. Park in a well-lit area
4. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle
5. Use a physical anti-theft device
6. Don’t leave your car running unattended-Get a remote start
7. Take advantage of a tech-based auto recovery tool
SLTPD asks you to be an observant neighbor and report suspicious behavior.
"We are working hard to address this rising crime, we can’t be everywhere," said the SLTPD in a press release. "We need the community’s eyes, ears, and diligence to protect yourself and your property from theft."
