CHP starts weekend campaign; Don't Drink and Drive on Super Bowl Sunday

The California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to be on the winning team on Super Bowl Sunday by not drinking and driving. With plenty of parties around the South Shore, including those at the casinos, local bars and private homes, the opportunities to drink will be plentiful.

California's Office of Traffic Safety reports a DUI arrest can add up to more than $17,000. The biggest hit comes from insurance premium increases, which can be upwards of $12,000.

The CHP's most recent Super Bowl stats are from 2012. That year, there were 225 alcohol-related crashes statewide. Of those, eight were fatal. And on that same day, officers made 422 DUI arrests.

AAA offers a free Tipsy Tow Service that will take you and your car home instead of driving while intoxicated.

"Drunk driving is an act that is completely preventable," said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. "All it takes is a little bit of planning to prevent a tragedy. We want Californians to remember that drinking and getting behind the wheel is a choice. If you choose to drink, do not drive, it is that simple."
