Gas meters buried by snow an issue for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Besides shoveling snow from walkways and driveways, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) is reminding residents to shovel out their gas meters.

Twice in a 24-hour period, SLTFR had to respond to two gas leaks caused by snow piled on top of gas meters. While this is a normal occurrence during a storm like what South Lake Tahoe is experiencing now, it is entirely preventable.

“This is an easy thing to do, and something people often forget,” said Jeff Meston, Fire Chief, “A build-up of snow and ice puts additional pressure on the meter and can cause leaks inside your home. It’s a situation that

could turn dangerous very quickly.”

You should use a broom, snow brush, or your hands to remove snow and ice from your gas meter. Don’t ever strike your gas meter to remove ice and snow.

E1 and Bat3 respond to an outside gas leak at a multiplex. The gas meters were dug out and gas turned off. The leak was caused by the piling of snow on the meters. SLTFR wants to remind you to keep your gas meters clear of snow and ice.
