South Lake Tahoe man faces stolen car and DUI charges just hours after release from jail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It didn't take long for a 24-year-old local man to head back to jail on Saturday, May 18.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call from a man at 3:20 p.m., alerting them that his car had just been stolen from the Glen Road/Pioneer Trail area. The victim had given someone a ride and needed to stop by his house and left the car running as he ran inside. He came out from his home and found both the car and rider gone.

Just moments later, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a call of a car running into the gas meter at a home on Sierra Blvd. Upon arrival they suspected the driver to be under the influence so they called SLTPD to take care of the driver while they dealt with the gas leak.

David Landa Montes had been in the El Dorado County jail since March on violation of parole charges. He was released from the jail at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.

After the 3:20 p.m. incident, Montes was booked on DUI and vehicle theft charges, and a new violation of parole charge. At this time his bail is set at $40,000.

The gas situation was taken care of, but not before SLTFR closed off roads in the area until the problem could be taken care of.

There were no injuries in the crash.
