Heavenly Lake Tahoe opens expert terrain at Mott Canyon

A recent winter storm that blanketed Heavenly Mountain Resort with as much as three-and-a-half feet of new snow has allowed the resort to open three quarters of the mountain, including the double-black diamond, expert-only Mott Canyon. Now with 3,600 open acres, Heavenly is offering the most skiable terrain at Lake Tahoe.

“We’re really pleased to be able to open Mott Canyon for our guests this weekend,” said Pete Sonntag, Heavenly’s general manger. “We’re continuing to push forward and create an exceptional experience for our guests. We’ve got the most open terrain, the best conditions and the most variety.”

Mott Canyon offers expert skiers and snowboarders some of the most challenging terrain in the region, with 40-degree pitches, deep snow and true North-facing aspects that keep the snow surprisingly winter-like. See video below for an inside look at how Heavenly Ski Patrol prepared Mott Canyon for opening.

With March being Heavenly’s second-snowiest month on average, skiers and snowboarders can expect great conditions over the season’s final month-and-a-half.

“It’s never too late to come out and enjoy the winter season,” Sonntag said. “We’ve got great skiing and riding conditions, our terrain parks are the best in the region, and we’ve got some exciting concerts and festivals coming up.”
