Kirkwood opens for 2020/21 season, Heavenly expands to Nevada side

In a year filled uncertainties and safety mandates, many have been anxiously awaiting the ski season at Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort opened last week, and now their sister Vail property, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, has opened.
As long as allowed, Kirkwood's winter operating plan is focused on comprehensive safety protocols, Kirkwood opened Friday with more than 180 acres of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-awaited opening day for skiing and riding in South Lake Tahoe arrived Friday with season pass holders hitting the slopes at Heavenly Mountain Resort. They joined Northstar in being the only two resorts in Lake Tahoe to open. Squaw Alpine opens on November 25, followed by Kirkwood December 4, Sierra-at-Tahoe has not announced an opening date.
Heavenly reported a foot of natural snow from this week's storm added on top of the snow they've been making since temperatures dropped a few weeks ago.
Heavenly Mountain Resort prepares for opening day Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Opening day at Heavenly Mountain Resort is planned for Friday, November 20, with ski and snowboard operations exclusive for all pass holders until December 8.
This year there are many changes due to COVID-19 and Vail says their goal is to prioritize pass holders, including those who have the Epic Day Pass. Those with passes need to reserve their day on the slopes as does the general non-pass holding public.
There will be no ticket sales at the Vail ski resorts this season and all is conducted virtually except for sightseeing rides.
Heavenly and Northstar turn on snowmaking machines

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local Vail resorts took advantage of the season's first cold spell and turned on their snowmaking machines at both Heavenly and Northstar at Lake Tahoe.
They will be working on a solid base for the upcoming 2020-21 winter season as long as the dry, old air continues.
Both of these resorts will be opening on November 20 while Kirkwood is aiming to open on December 4. Kirkwood's systems are set to kick in later this week, conditions permitting.

After a gangbuster start to the winter season, a lot of us in Tahoe are wondering where all the snow has gone. Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.
Still, the mountains have been buzzing with activity as skiers and snowboarders race to the mountains to enjoy what natural snow we’ve received and are ever thankful for the assist from local resorts’ snowmaking operations.

Don't ski or ride? That's okay, help sponsor a participant or join in on the BBQ and raffle fun following the runs at Temple Bat Yam.
All skiers are riders taking part in the event are asked to raise at least $90 in pledges but don't let that hold you back on raising more!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites the public to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort this winter, starting on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours will begin each Friday at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

Cross-country skiing returns to Spooner Lake State Park

Once again, Spooner Lake State Park offers outdoor sports enthusiasts a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.
This trail system is free to the public and made possible by a partnership between Nevada State Parks and Nevada Nordic, a non-profit group based in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The scenic, intermediate trail includes several teardrop loops with flat rolling terrain, which makes it great for both families and experienced skiers. For current trail conditions visit nevadanordic.org.

Taking a break from helping skiers and keeping them safe on Heavenly Mountain Resort’s slopes, Heavenly Ski Patrol members exchanged their skis for Bread & Broth aprons to help feed Monday Meal dinner guests on March 4, 2019. As a follow-up to an Adopt A Day of Nourishment on February 4, Heavenly Ski Patrol sponsored their second AAD for the year and sent another great crew to serve at the B&B dinner.
Joining the B&B volunteers were Ski Patrol members Brandon Commanda, Lucas Johnstone, Michelle Loubet, Jacob Madecky and Marissa Streck.

Vail Resorts in Lake Tahoe extend ski season due to record snowfall

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is being called #FebruBURIED for a reason, record snowfall on the slopes of Lake Tahoe and in the communities in the basin that never stopped. Resorts have broken records for the month, prompting Vail Resorts to announce today they are extending the 2018-19 ski season.
Heavenly Mountain Resort - Plans to extend the season through April 28, with a bonus 3-day-weekend May 3-5.
Northstar California Resort - Plans to extend the season through April 21, Easter Sunday.

Skiers and their dog rescued after spending two chilly nights in the Sierra

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Two skiers and their dog spent two chilly nights in the snow before being rescued by a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter on Monday morning.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office requested CHP Helicopter H-20 to assist them in locating skiers who had been missing since the afternoon of Saturday, February 16. H-20 located the skiers in the snowy mountains miles away from Highway 88 and Peddler Hill, south of Lake Tahoe. They had built a snow cave to survive the sub-freezing temperatures.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe is the destination of thousands of people a month, no matter what the season. It's beauty, splendor and recreational opportunities beckon people from around the world. The epic snowfall this season has put many Sacramento and Bay Area residents on the roads to Lake Tahoe, but with the crowded highways (both I80 and US50), many drivers are going to their GPS and mapping apps to find the best, and quickest, route to paradise.

Scattered Snow Showers today but Fresh Snow over & Machine Groomed Packed Powder! It Doesn’t Get Any Better! More Lifts and Trails opening at Resorts. Expect Road Conditions to Change thru out the Day! Have Fun, Ski & Ride with a Buddy & Be Safe!
TODAY’S WEATHER: Expect Scattered Snow Showers. Snow accumulation of 2-4”. Highs: 26F-31F. (16F-21F on the slopes) Southwest Winds 10-15 mph. Ridge Gusts up to 55 mph.

Road Controls – Chain Restrictions posted on All Roadways in and around Lake Tahoe. Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Wind Holds and Lift Closures. Road Controls Posted for all roadways with chain restrictions posted. Hwy 88 & Emerald Bay Road Closed… Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!

Fresh Powder reported at all Resorts… Resorts are digging out and Lifts will be on Delayed openings today… Winter Strom Warning in effect thru 12 pm Sunday… Expect Upper Mtn. Wind Holds and Lift Closures. At this time (8:30 am), I-80, Hwy 88, Hwy 267, Hwy 431 & Emerald Bay Road are CLOSED… All other roadways have chain restrictions posted. Stay out of the Backcountry! Avalanche Danger is High! Be Safe!
