Free Nordic skiing back at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Through a private-public partnership, California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation successfully brought back free Nordic skiing at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park along Lake Tahoe’s West shore.

The public can ski on the trails made famous when the 1960 Winter Olympics’ biathlon and cross-country events were held there, designed at the time by South Lake Tahoe's Martin Hollay.

There have been various threats to the continued grooming of the cross-country ski trails at Sugar Pine Point due to funding shortages.

“The trails are such a benefit to the community and it’s wonderful that the Sierra State Parks Foundation can offer them,” said Susan Grove, Board Member of Sierra State Parks Foundation.

The snow trails will continue to be groomed for the remainder of the snow season every Monday and Friday. Call the Park Snow-phone for up to date grooming and park information at 530-525-7982.

This donor supported program depends on the dedication and diligence of volunteers Rob Weston and Ray O’Brien who consistently maintain the trails despite the overwhelming amount of snow this winter. Free trail maps are available at the trailhead or by visiting the Sierra State Parks Foundation website at www.SierraStateParks.org.
