Oprah praises Jaycee Dugard at New York awards ceremony

Jaycee Dugard made her first appearance at a public event since her 1991 kidnapping on Friday night, receiving an award at the United Nations in New York and praise from fellow honoree Oprah Winfrey.
Dugard, 31, was presented the Inspiration Award from fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg at the DVF Awards, which honor women who display leadership, strength and courage. But first she was lauded by Oprah.
"I wanted to have the opportunity to meet her and to tell her how much her story and her life meant to me," said Winfrey, in an Associated Press interview. "Jaycee Dugard, I am so proud of you, your courage, your ability to press onward toward the future and toward a more victorious life for yourself and for using your courage and your strength and your power to show the world that you care."

Dugard, kidnapped near her family's South Lake Tahoe home at age 11 and held in captivity in an unincorporated area near Antioch for 18 years, was soft-spoken and occasionally emotional, according to the Associated Press.
