Drivers along Highway 50 between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento this weekend will see an increased presence of law enforcement in an effort to reduce fatalities on the roadway.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will have extra officers on the road as part of their zero tolerance enforcement operation. They will be targeting aggressive drivers, drivers using unsafe speeds and those making unsafe passing and lane changes.
According to a CHP new release, from January 2010 through May 2013, 2,008 collisions occurred as a result of various speed violations on Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe through Sacramento. Those collisions resulted in the five deaths and 968 injuries.
The CHP received a grant designed to reduce aggressive driving incidents and enforce speed limits. Officials said that this will not be the only weekend of extra patrols and more are expected between now and September 30.
The operation will begin on Friday and go through Sunday.
