Washoe County reports their first death of a resident from COVID-19

In a Monday morning press conference, Washoe County updated the community on the current COVID-19 situation as they continue to urge residents to stay at home to prevent its spread.

The first Washoe County resident died from COVID-19 over the weekend. He was in his 49s and the case is under investigation. It is unknown at this time if the man has underlying health conditions.

“We’re devastated to learn that a Washoe County resident has died due to COVID-19,” said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

"I was heartbroken to learn the news of our first Washoe County resident dying from COVID-19 complications. As a husband, father, grandson and fellow northern Nevada, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to this man’s family and loved ones. We are grieving with you, and know that our community is committed to stop the spread of this disease so we do not have another family go through what you are having to experience," said Washoe County Commission Chair Bob Lucey during a press conference Monday morning.

"I also want to thank our healthcare community, medical professionals and first responders. You have been working tirelessly to take care of us, our community, and for that, we offer our sincerest thanks," he added. "In addition to gratitude, I would begin by asking this of our community: please honor their sacrifice and long hours by doing your part and staying home."

The county's COVID-19 Incident Management Team is stressing the importance of social distancing, proper handwashing with soap for 20 seconds, staying home when you are sick, self-isolation for 14 days if you have traveled out of the area and limiting contact with people outside your home, especially with those who have symptoms of cough, fever, and shortness of breath.

There are currently 107 cases of COVI-19 in Washoe County after the Health District announced 14 additional cases. One additional case has recovered and is released from self-isolation, increasing the total recoveries to eight.

They have not broken down cases by city and it is unknown if any of the confirmed cases are in Incline Village.

Reno Police Department Chief Jason Soto has reported that a member of sworn personnel assigned to the Patrol Section has tested positive for Covid-19. The employee began experiencing symptoms of coronavirus on March 21, 2020, and immediately contacted the Health District and began to be quarantined at home. The Health District subsequently tested the employee, and Saturday evening the Reno Police Department learned the employee tested positive.
