SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three cubs who arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care in March are thriving at their new, temporary home.
On March 12, 2019, Tom and Cheryl Millam, founders of the animal care facility, picked up Yreka and Blaze from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Investigation Lab in Rancho Cordova. They had been found on the side of a road in Yreka and weighed just over four pounds each. During their first ten days at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) they each put on a pound of weight through a healthy regime of formula.
As of April 2 they each weigh almost nine pounds.
Another bear cub, Paradise, arrived March 21 from the Camp Fire area, weighing 14 pounds....very light for a 14-month-old cub. He too is thriving with the formula, now weighing 23 pounds and getting healthier every day.
This care for the three cubs and all of the other wildlife that comes through LTWC's doors isn't cheap. The nonprofit depends on donations and their current membership drive helps support their care efforts.
The formula for babies costs about $30-$40 a week, then when they start eating food that bill goes up to $100 a week.
The current membership drive comes with something for those who donate, depending on the amount:
Black Bear, $5,000 - 4 Tickets to Wild & Free Fundraising Dinner, Invitation to meet our Animal Care Director and educational animals, and an LTWC clothing item of your choice
Bobcat, $2,500 - 4 Tickets to Wild & Free Fundraising Dinner and an LTWC clothing item of your choice
Eagle, $1,000 - 2 Tickets to Wild & Free Fundraising Dinner
River Otter, $500 - 1 Ticket to Wild & Free Fundraising Dinner
Great-Horned Owl, $300 - LTWC Sweatshirt
Fawn, $200 - LTWC T-Shirt
Raccoon, $100 - LTWC Tote Bag
Squirrel, $50 - LTWC Mug
Steller’s Jay, $30 - LTWC Pin
Or become a sustaining member and make monthly donations - helping ensure their operations run smoothly year-round. They will start moving their operations over to their new location on AL Tahoe Boulevard later this year
