Overland Meat & Seafood gives away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The line of "socially distant" people stretched down 3rd Street in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning. They were there to get the free packages of hamburger Overland Meat & Seafood Co. was giving to the community during the financially stressful times brought by the coronavirus

In business since 1987, Overland said this was their best, and largest, event in the 33 years they've been open.

"The line moved fast and we ended up giving away just over 1000 pounds of ground beef in about 1 hour and 40 minutes," said Brian Cohen, owner of Overland Meat & Seafood Co. "I really thought we would make at least lunchtime."

Each person was given two one-pound packages of ground beef, so 500 people were given the free meat.

"We are grateful for the continued support of our town," said Cohen.

He said he is looking forward to the future when those getting the free meat could "pay it forward."

"We will get through this together," added Cohen.

He said the need for help in the community was obvious Monday and people should stay tuned to their Facebook page (which is carried on the front page of SouthTahoeNow.com) for future events like Monday's giveaway.
