Historic estate near Edgewood sells for $8.5 million

A home designed by Julia Morgan on the shores of South Lake Tahoe near Stateline has sold for $8.5 million, making it the largest residential home sales in the city in nearly a decade.

Morgan, best known as being the architect behind Hearst Castle in San Simeon, designed two homes in Lake Tahoe. The one on the South Shore, named Twin Pines, was built in 1928 and includes a 2,750-square-foot main house with an 864-square-foot guesthouse. The home sits on 1.65 acres with more than 180 feet of sandy beach, a pier, and buoy.

The other home Morgan designed, Bow Bay, is in Rubicon Bay. She designed it in 1939 for Else Schilling. It sits on seven acres and has 400 ft of lake frontage and sold in 2014 for $14 million. Morgan is credited for designing over 700 properties.

Both the buyer and seller of Twin Pines, which is on Stateline Avenue, were represented by Chase International agents.

Susan Lowe, senior vice president of Chase, represented the seller in the sale. “It’s a one-of-a-kind property,” Lowe said, emphasizing the significance of Morgan’s work. “The new owners are intent to preserve this historic estate.”

“South Lake Tahoe is booming right now,” said Mike Dunn, who represented the buyer. “This is an exquisite home that is also one of the notable, historic residences at Lake Tahoe. With such limited lakefront inventory on the market right now, it’s an incredible find.”

Lowe notes that the redevelopment and revitalization is creating a new energy and attracting new buyers. “South Lake Tahoe is evolving. It’s become its own village destination with everything just steps away from your front door. That’s what today’s discerning buyers and travelers are looking for.”
