Click it or Ticket campaign on Nevada roadways

Through the end of May, the Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement agencies have launched Click it or Ticket, an campaign to educate motorists on seatbelt usage. During this time, officers will be joining forces and watching for drivers and occupants in vehicles who are not wearing their seatbelts and/or children who are not properly secured in car or booster seat(s). Law enforcement will be stopping drivers for traffic offenses and issuing citations for seatbelt violations if unbuckled. Seat belts are for protection, and the high-visibility enforcement mobilization to crack down on violators is not about increasing revenue – it’s about saving lives.

All drivers, and passengers six-years-old and above that weigh more than 60 pounds, must wear a seat belt. Any child less than 6 years of age AND who weighs less than 60 pounds must ride in a federally-approved child restraint system.

Though not the law, it is always safest for children under 13-years-old to sit in the back seat, even short trips from home.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 12,584 lives were saved by wearing seat belts, yet 49 percent of occupants who were killed in 2013 weren’t restrained. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone traveling in a vehicle during the upcoming traveling season to please buckle up. It only takes two seconds to put your seat belt on to help save your life, please buckle your seat belt each time you are in a vehicle.

Seat belt citations carry a $75.00 fine after court and administration fees. A citation for an unrestrained child is significantly higher. However, this is far less than the cost of a crash where the victims aren't wearing a seatbelt.

“No one wakes up expecting to lose a loved one in a car accident, but the chances increase if someone does not use a seat belt," said Douglas County Sheriff Pierini. "No one wants that to happen in our wonderful community, I encourage everyone to wear a seat belt while traveling”.
