All events on City of South Lake Tahoe property postponed through at least mid-July

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Events on City property through at least July 14 have been postponed, including the 4th of July Parade.

As South Lake Tahoe starts to reopen with guidelines from California Governor Newsom for Phase 2, the directives toward events won't be addressed until future phases so the City took action during their meeting Tuesday.

The first three stages of the Governors re-opening plan do not permit large gatherings. Stage four allows for large public gatherings like concerts and festivals. Stage four conditions include the presence of therapeutics such as a vaccine and antibody testing to prevent spikes in disease transmission. City staff said it is difficult to plan for special events that would attract large groups of people.

All organized events on City property including the BMX Park and Community Playfields will not be allowed until at least the Council's July 14 meeting. Many tournaments come to South Lake Tahoe and needed to start planning if they were to be held. Since it is unknown at this time if large events will be allowed by summer, the Council will readdress during their July meeting.

Live at Lakeview isn't canceled yet. On Course Events owner Rob Giustina said he wants to keep the popular Thursday night concert series at Lakeview Commons going, but knows the safety of the community comes first. He did say that canceling all of the summer events would hamper his ability to produce the shows in 2021. He'd like to see at least a major end-of-summer concert.

"We are committed to the community," Giustina said.

Other events that are held during the summer on City property include five months of bike park events, two months of disc golf events, and September's Sample the Sierra and Bijou Bash.

The City will look at reopening parking lots at their recreation properties, including Regan Beach and Bijou Community Park. Staff will see what is needed to keep restrooms clean and safe for users and any other issues with reopening. They expect those areas to be open prior to the July 14 meeting.
