Phase one of community playfield project to break ground

A joint effort between the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Community College will soon expand recreation offerings on the South Shore.

The Community Playfields Expansion Project will bring two new playfields to the area as work gets underway on the Community Playfields Expansion Project adjacent to the current soccer field at the college.

SLT City Council awarded a construction contract at their May 17, 2016 meeting in the amount of $338,409 to local company Burdick Excavation Co. Inc. to begin construction of the playfield expansion project. Local business, Ed Cook Tree Service, is subcontracted to remove the trees. Since the two new playfields cover both City and College property, Project Manager and City employee Chuck Taylor has been working closely with Engineering Technician, Randy Carlson, to bring the design from a concept plan to fully engineered construction drawings and specifications.

At the South Tahoe Middle School playfield, Lake Tahoe Unified School District is installing lights to further play options for the community.

The fields are configured side by side and are FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) standard natural grass soccer fields to meet the requirements for competitive college soccer and to serve multi-sports and play activities.

The City's project will be built in two phases. The first phase will include site clearing; grading and storm water BMPs and an ADA path will be built this summer. The second phase is scheduled for spring of 2017 and will include installation of the irrigation system, sod, and utility connections. The Project includes a sidewalk connecting the new grass fields with the existing Community Playfields parking lot to meet accessibility requirements. The existing 150-space lighted parking lot near the existing concession/restroom facility was built with the construction of the first field and has the capacity to serve all three playfields.
