The V&T Railway steams into summer; Opens for season this weekend

Event Date:
May 23, 2015 (All day)

The historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad (V&T) will be opening for the summer this Memorial Day. Retracing the famous Comstock-era right-of-way, the historic trains travel the same 16-mile silver route. The V&T Railway, the richest short-line in American history, originally operated during the raucous silver strike era of the infamous Comstock Lode from 1869 to 1938.

Everyone will enjoy this train ride from the very young to the not so very young. Train enthusiasts, history lovers, Old West aficionados, residents and visitors looking to enjoy the area and its vibe will be able to relive a bygone era by hearing the stories of its past and present along the route.

The opening train ride is Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. It departs from 4650 Eastgate Depot Siding Road, Carson City, NV which is 7 miles east of Carson City on Hwy 50.

The Memorial Day Weekend kickoff will feature entertainment and champagne mimosas, celebrating the first official excursion of the summer. Weekend trains feature two steam engines leading three 1914 Pullman cars. Aficionados will see either a 1916 Baldwin Consolidation 2-8-0 or a 1914 Baldwin-Built Mikado 2-8-2 engine leading the charge.

Running Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 18 from Carson City Nevada's capital, to Virginia City, the 1860s boom-era mining town of Comstock Lode fame, passengers will be immersed in Old West history and lore, spectacular scenery, as well as dining and shopping opportunities. An added steam train trip will roll every Friday July 3 through mid-October -- - nine in all.
