Free screening on Latino American history movie at LTCC

Event Date:
May 24, 2016 - 12:00pm

Lake Tahoe Community College welcomes the community to a free film screening and talk on Tuesday, May 24 at 12 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room inside the library building. The screening is “Episode 5: Prejudice and Pride” from the multi-part documentary Latino Americans: 500 Years of History. The screening will be followed by a talk led by Dr. Albert Ponce, who teaches History, Political Science and Ethnic Studies at LTCC. This bilingual event is free and open to all.

The film Latino Americans: 500 Years of History was produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). It is a nationwide public programming initiative that supports the exploration of the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape the United States over the last five centuries and who have become, with more than 50 million people, America's largest minority group.

More than 200 institutions around the country, including LTCC, received funding, resources and support to host festivals, collect oral histories, facilitate informed discussions and hold other public events about Latino American history and culture between July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016. Grant winners will host scholar-led viewing and discussion events that feature the documentary film Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, supported by an NEH grant and created for PBS by the WETA public television station.
