Event Date:
May 30, 2015 - 10:00am

The Sixth Annual Native Species Festival will be held at the Taylor Creek visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This free family event is hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and is a great way to spend the day outdoors and learn about the native species of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Visitor's Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Activities include guided walks led by field professionals to learn about local trees and wildlife, a free training on how to identify and remove invasive plants sponsored by the League to Save Lake Tahoe and a guided nature walk for dog owners hosted by the Lake Tahoe Humane Society. Educational booths from various public and non-profit agencies will feature information on the American black bear, native birds, the American beaver, Tahoe yellow cress and more. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will return this year with the inflatable fish tent and the large fish tank, which holds native Lahontan cutthroat trout.

Hot dogs, snacks, drinks and ice cream will be available for purchase. The local band, Fugitive Roots, will provide live music.

This event is made possible by the following partners, agencies and non-profit organizations: California Conservation Corps, California Department of Fish and Wildlife , California State Parks, Camp Richardson Resort, Full Circle Compost, Generation Green, Lahontan National Fish Hatchery, Lake Tahoe Humane Society, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, League to Save Lake Tahoe, Sierra Wildlife Coalition, Sugar Pine Foundation, Tahoe Expedition Academy, Tahoe Institute for Natural Sciences, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
