Light Up the South Shore contest winners announced

The inaugural Light Up the South Shore Holiday Contest lit up the community with some much-needed Christmas cheer. Over 50 businesses and residents competed with their festive displays for the five coveted awards. The contest was held by the Tahoe Chamber.

Humane Society in South Lake Tahoe has free dog and cat food to help pet owners

The South Lake Tahoe community has not only been donating food to help their human neighbors, but also for their four-legged pets.

The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee (HSTT) office in South Lake Tahoe has shelves full of pet food that if ready for pickup by pet owners who need assistance.

Their office is located at 3438 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee starts pet bereavement group

The death of a pet can be devastating, and for some, the grief can be more intense than human loss. To help, the Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee (HSTT) has launched a Pet Loss Support Group for grieving pet parents. This group will help those experiencing this loss, or anticipated loss, of their furry friend.

53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation

Local nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.

Nominations announced for the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Awards

The Tahoe Chamber collected 190 nominations from the community for the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Award to celebrate the businesses, non-profits and individuals that make the South Shore of Lake Tahoe so unique. Humane Society has cure for canceled vacations - Adopt Florence or other available pets

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe will be holding an adoption day on Wednesday, September 23 at 10:00 a.m. They have over a dozen vaCATion puppies and kittens available for adoption at that time.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe offering increased support to South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In response to the COVID-19 pandemic the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been providing increased support to the South Lake Tahoe community, distributing hundreds of pounds of cat and dog food along with numerous other services.

The food distribution from when HSTT shut down to the public due to COVID are as follows:

Dry dog food: 1719 lbs total ~ 171 lbs a week
Dry cat food: 178 lbs total ~ 18 lbs a week
Canned dog food: 636 cans ~ 64 cans a week
Canned cat food: 467 cans ~ 47 cans a week
Cat litter: 130 lbs total ~ 13 lbs a week

Giving Tuesday pet adoption and fundraising day for Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is having a special puppy adoption day on May 5 to coincide with the annual Giving Tuesday fundraising day.

"Little Rays of Sunshine" is bringing two litters with a total of 11 puppies, along with one of the moms, to the public for adoption.

Pet of the Week: Wilson

This week's Pet of the Week is Wilson, a 13-year-old male cat.

"I’m new and the staff is still getting to know me," says his post on The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe's website. But he is affectionate, mellow and shy.

Wilson is microchipped, neutered and current on vaccinations. He weighs nine pounds.

His adoption fee is $75.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe recognizes World Spay Day with free surgeries

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is joining local veterinarians as well as the Town of Truckee in providing free spay and neuter surgeries during World Spay Day on February 25 and February's Spay/Neuter Awareness Month around Lake Tahoe.

The procedures are available for qualifying cats or dogs in the community to mark World Spay Day on February 25th, 2020. South Lake Tahoe appointments are full that day, but there are still some available on the North Shore.

Positive results for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe during their first two months

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Providing a much-needed service in the community, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been filling a void with special pet therapy training, wellness clinics, spay and neuter programs.

Since opening in December 2019, HSTT has provided over 100 spay and neuters to the community for free or at a reduced rate. They have also trained 60 new volunteers.

Supported by the Petco Foundation, this innovative program aims to increase feline adoption rates and maintain cat “mojo.”

Tips to keep pets safe during winter in Lake Tahoe

Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.

HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society disbands, turns operations over to Truckee Tahoe group

Ex-Humane Society director finishes jail term just one month after guilty plea

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though she was sentenced to six months in jail after taking a plea deal for her embezzlement of almost $60,000, Niki Congero, the former executive director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, has been released and is now back in Tennessee a free woman.

She was in the El Dorado County Jail from August 1 to October 28, a total of 89 days. Her jail term started the day of her arrest in Tennessee.

Outpouring of love by South Shore community for Camp Fire victims

Many in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers community remember where they were at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007 and what happened in the days that followed. The Angora Fire quickly tore through neighborhoods, destroying 251 homes and burning 3,100 acres. While it seems small in comparison with the monster fires of 2017 and 2018, it took everything from so many local families.

South Lake Tahoe youth fundraising for dogs and cats

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four local young ladies are continuing to help the South Lake Tahoe community with their fundraising efforts to help different needs on the South Shore.

For the 2018 Christmas season Maiella and Milan Riva, Lily Demus and Simone Sitchon will be collecting items and money to help both Lake Tahoe Humane Society and El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Last year the four girls collected clothing and toys for local foster youth and in 2016 they collected gloves, hats, socks, coats, and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room.

Convicted El Dorado County puppy broker gets another 240 days in jail

An El Dorado Hills woman who was convicted of felony animal cruelty charges in 2016 has been sentenced to an additional 240 days of jail time for violating the conditions of her felony probation. The jail sentence was handed down in El Dorado County Superior Court on November 9, 2018.

Ginger Turk, 48, a puppy broker, has had many run-ins with the law over the years due to her illegal practice of importing tiny, under-aged, un-weaned, high-priced ($4,000+) puppies from South Korea and selling them over the internet and in person.

Former Lake Tahoe Humane Society director offered plea agreement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The former executive director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society will be back in court on Monday, September 24 to face felony charges of embezzlement.

Nicola "Niki" Congero has been offered a plea agreement by the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office and has until the 8:30 a.m. hearing Monday to give them her answer. She is being represented by El Dorado County Public Defender James Warden who has been with Congero during her court hearings on August 28 and September 10.

Nicola "Niki" Congero, the former Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS) executive director accused of embezzlement, is now sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville.

On Sunday, August 19, 2018, the El Dorado County Sheriff's extradition team returned from Knoxville, Tennessee with Congero. She is accused of using the LTHS debit card on personal things such gambling, rental furniture for her home, dentist bills, family cell phones, repairs to family members vehicles, and numerous point of sale purchases with cash back at casinos, just to name a few.

Former Lake Tahoe Humane Society director arrested on embezzlement charges

Detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department flew to Tennessee overnight to arrest Nicola "Niki" Congero, the former executive director of Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

Congero, 50, was arrested without incident on the morning of Wednesday, August 1 and booked into the Knoxville jail on charges of embezzling approximately $60,000 from the South Lake Tahoe based non-profit. She is being held there on $200,000 bail and is currently awaiting extradition.

Michael Dalton will be the new president and is joined by VP of Governance and Compliance Sandra DeLeon, VP of Operations Chantale Hansen, Mariel Berei, secretary and Elizabeth Naylor, treasurer.

Lorna Lefler, Sue Pritchett, and Kim Stephenson, the board who tried to hold things together after the firing of their former executive director, will be stepping down effective immediately.

Rudolph M. Pakes Sr, 91, passed away peacefully and with grace in his home on February 14, 2018 his family by his side.

Rudy was born on June 4, 1926 in Belle Valley, Ohio. His parents Andrew Pakes and Susan Krempasky immigrated from what was then Czechoslovakia for the promise of the “American Dream.” They met and married in Belle Valley, where Andrew worked in the coalmines. Rudy had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He had a wonderful childhood in Ohio, all of his siblings attended K-12 in a one-room schoolhouse.

Students ease exam stress with pets from Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe recently brought pets to Truckee High School and North Tahoe High School to act as therapy dogs and help ease the tension and stress of midterm exams. The students had the opportunity to take a break from studying and test-taking to pet and play with the shelter dogs.

Dogs help students de-stress before finals at LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't your normal evening in the library at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) on Thursday. There was no librarian with the proverbial "shhhh." There was no quiet spot to study, and there was a table full of food and a lounge full of dogs.

Yes, dogs.

The volunteers from Lake Tahoe Humane Society who take their therapy dogs to Barton Health's Skilled Nursing Facility five days a week brought their dogs to the library as part of the school's quarterly De-Stress Night.

Designer's adoption event helps pets find forever homes

A North Lake Tahoe designer's sponsoring of adoption fees resulted in more than a dozen pets found homes last month.

Scott Corridan took care of the fees at the at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) August 17-19.

A total of nine dogs and eight cats were adopted during the three-day event, nearly breaking shelter records. New owners were also treated to a mini photo shoot designed by Corridan.

“Witnessing the joy and connection between these adopters and their new pet was profoundly moving,” Corridan said. “To be able to be a part of that was an honor.”

TEDx South Lake Tahoe speaker lineup announced

After a popular, and sold out, inaugural event in 2016, TEDx South Lake Tahoe is coming back and promises to be bigger and better.

The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.
