Three fires burning south of Lake Tahoe

9:30 p.m. update - Highway 395 has reopened in both directions after firefighters got the upper hand on the Topaz Fire which burned 8 acres between Topaz Lake and the highway near Topaz Lodge. One outbuilding burned. 4 engines will remain on the fire overnight. No containment has been listed at this time. Jurisdiction is East Fork Fire Protection District.

The Payne fire, the biggest of the three burning Tuesday, was in Alpine County near the Celio Ranch has burned 100 acres since it was first reported at 2:00 p.m. The fire is currently 100 acres and 45 percent contained. The fire is under the jurisdiction of the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest. There are currently 5 engines, 3 crews, 2 helicopters and 3 single engine air tankers working this fire and there one was injury (to thumb) reported.

The Ray May Fire was fully contained at 6:00 p.m. It was located at Ray May Way and Highway 395 and burned 3.6 acres. The jurisdiction of this fire is the Bureau of Land Management.

7:15 p.m. update - Fire crews have the Payne Fire in Alpine County 30 percent contained. The amount burned remains at 90 acres.

Over at Topaz Lodge, now that the smoke has subsided, fire officials have reduced the acreage burned to 8.

The Ray May Fire on Highway 395 is fully contained after burning 3.68 acres.

6:00 p.m. update - The wildfire north of Topaz Lodge remains at 20 acres with multiple crews on the scene to fight the fire.

In Alpine County, the Payne Fire on Rattlesnake Hill has consumed 90 acres. Helicopter, engines and hand crews are on the scene.

The Ray May Fire on Highway 395 is under control and the total acreage burned has been reduced to 3.68 acres.

5:15 p.m. update - The Topaz Fire has consumed 20 acres at this hour, with one structure lost. Voluntary evacuation is still underway. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, several propane tanks in the area are threatened. Hand crews and strike team in from Reno as well as a helicopter.

The voluntary evacuation are in the Mark Twain, Comstock, Aurora Masonic and Goldfield areas.

The Payne Fire in Alpine County has spread to 65 acres in the Rattlesnake Hill and Celio Ranch area. They too have multiple crews fighting the fire as well as a helicopter attack.

The Ray May Fire remains at five acres.

4:45 p.m. update - Southbound US395 is closed at SR208/Holbrook Junction due to the wildfire at Topaz Lake. NHP has closed the Nevada side, CHP the California side. The fast moving wildfire is forcing voluntary evacuations of homes in the Topaz Lake area in south Douglas County, according to dispatchers.

There are currently three fires burning south of Lake Tahoe, all starting between 2:03 p.m and 3:24 p.m.

The first is a 45-acre wildfire burning in Alpine County 1 mile east of SR-88. This is being called the Payne Fire.

Second fire is the Ray May Fire burning off Highway 395 at Ray May Way. That has consumed 5 acres.

The third fire, dubbed the Topaz Fire has burned 5 acres and is south of Topaz Lodge.
