Wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe and Sierra: Water activities could be "hazardous"

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory to be in effect from noon Tuesday to 11:00 p.m. Thursday on Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake and others in the Sierra Nevada.

Winds will be from the south to southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph each afternoon and evening through Thursday. Winds will slacken up some overnight and into the morning; however, some chop may continue through the night, especially on Lake Tahoe, according to NWS-Reno.

Wave Heights on Lake Tahoe will be 2 to 4 feet for mid-lake to north and east shores.

"Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve," stated the advisory. "Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind."
