Two LTUSD Board of Education seats open in November election

There are two seats on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education up for election on November 6, 2018, those in Trustee Area #2 and #5.
These board seats are currently held by current Board President Barbara Banner and current Board Clerk Angela Swanson. Banner has served on the board since 2012 and has been president since 2014. Swanson was selected to fulfill the term of Ginger Nicolay-Davis and has been on the board this time since 2016.
Those interesting in running must live in the same Trustee Areas as the two incumbents. The filing period is July 16 – Aug. 10, 2018.
To be eligible for election, Board candidates must be 18 years of age or older; a citizen of the state; a resident of the school district; a registered voter; and not disqualified by the constitution or laws of the state from holding a civil office.
The Lake Tahoe Unified School District is governed by five members of the Board of Education who serve staggered four-year terms. School board members are locally elected public officials entrusted with governing our community’s public schools.
The Board uses a voting system of “Elections by Trustee Areas” which means that Board members have specific geographic trustee areas in which they must live and are elected only by the residents of that area.
It is vitally important that voters pay attention to the citizens they select to oversee their schools — the lay governing board members to whom they entrust their children and their tax dollars. It is equally important that school board candidates understand the depth of commitment required to effectively fulfill the school board role.
The Elections Department is scheduling appointments for filing for the Nov. 6, 2018 election at the South Lake Tahoe Recorder Clerks Office as follows:
July 26, 2018 – 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
August 9, 2018 – 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
More appointments are available in Placerville between July 16 – August 10, 2018.
