Filing period opens July 13 for South Lake Tahoe elected positions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Election Day in 2020 is on November 3, just 134 days away. There will be several elected positions opening up in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers: South Tahoe Public Utility District, South Lake Tahoe City Council, Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees, Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees, and the Lake Valley Fire Board of Directors.

Filing papers are accepted from Monday, July 13, to Friday, August 7, 2020. Unless mentioned below, the Declaration of Candidacy papers are available by appointment at El Dorado County Recorder-Clerk’s office located at 3368 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, Suite 108, in South Lake Tahoe. Please contact the El Dorado County Elections Department to schedule an appointment at (530) 621-7490.

If an incumbent fails to file for their term by the last day of the filing period, the filing period will be extended to Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. - the incumbent may not file after August 7.

South Lake Tahoe City Council

Two seats will be voted on in November, those currently held by Mayor Jason Collin and Councilwoman Brooke Laine.

The City Clerk Sue Blankenship serves as the election officer for the City and is responsible for coordinating consolidation of elections with the El Dorado County Elections Department. Persons interested in running for City Council should make an appointment with the City Clerk to be issued Nomination Papers and Candidacy Forms. Filing period opens Monday, July 13, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. and closes August 7, 2020, at 5:00 p.m

To be eligible to run for a City Elected Official position, persons must be a registered voter of the City of South Lake Tahoe at the time nomination papers are issued. Registered voters in South Lake Tahoe must be U.S. Citizens, residents within the City of South Lake Tahoe city limits, 18 years of age or older on the date of the election, and not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.

South Tahoe Public Utility District Board (STPUD)

Three board member seats for South Tahoe Public Utility District are up for election. To run for the Board, you must be a registered voter within the District service area and file your candidacy papers. STPUD is governed by a five-member Board, elected by popular vote of the general public who reside within the District boundaries with three of those seats opening up in November.

The terms held by Board President Randy Vogelgesang, Vice President Kelly Sheehan, and member Duane Wallace are up for election this fall. Normally terms are for four years, but the seat occupied by Wallace is for two years due to the passing of Jim Jones. Wallace was appointed to fill the seat until the general election and the person who wins this seat in November will hold it until 2022. Interested applicants must specify which position they wish to run for and cannot file for both.

Board Members receive medical, dental, and vision benefits and a $400 per month stipend. Board Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the District Board Room located at 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD)

There are three seats open in the upcoming election, those held by Board President Larry Reilly, Area 1, Board Clerk Troy Matthews, Area r, and Trustee Bonnie Turnbull, Area 3.

Applicants must reside in the area defined by the open seat. (See Maps here).

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC)

Since 2014, the trustee must reside in the area defined by a map of Trustee Areas. (See Map)

The positions held by Board President Nancy Dalton, Area 4, and Jeff Cowen, Area 3, will be open in the 2020 election.

Lake Valley Fire Board of Directors

The November election will be for three seats of the five-person board, those currently held by John Rice, Robert Bettencourt, and Leona Allen.
