South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue now has loaner bike helmets as well as life jackets

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has teamed up with LimeBike and California Department of Boats and Waterways (DBW) to keep those having fun on the lake, or on LimeBike scooters and bicycles, safe this summer.

After a recent South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, Fire Chief Jeff Meston and representatives from LimeBike got together to see how they could keep users of the popular scooters and bikes safe. Helmets are required when operating the electric scooters, but most users are not wearing them, mainly due to a lack of helmets at time of rental. Meston and LimeBike came up with a plan much like the one already in place with DBW, loaner equipment.

The two fire stations, located at 1252 Ski Run Boulevard and at 2101 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, will carry loaner helmets for users. They have about 30 of varying sizes at each station and people may pick them up during daylight hours.

Last year, Meston and DBW got together to provide loaner life jackets for those on boats to use as required by law. They carry infant, child and adult sizes and are available at the same two stations during daylight hours.

Each loaner helmet has the LimeBike logo sticker on it and each vest bears "SLTFR" on them.
