SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation provided more than $360,000 in funding during 2019, delivering a profound community impact made possible by philanthropy and donor generosity over the year. Medical equipment, new technology, care provider education, and support, expanding access to mental and behavioral health services, and funding for local organizations were all aspects of the Barton Foundation’s scope of giving last year, as part of its commitment to community well-being through Barton Health.

LTCC expands child care to evening hours to help student parents

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For some students, there are many barriers to their being able to get a college degree, one of them being affordable child care. A recent move by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is helping remove that barrier by having extended hours on Monday and Tuesday evenings so parents who are LTCC students can attend classes and/or study.

The Lake Tahoe Community College, Foster Kinship Care Education Program offers presentations that are free and open to the community. The fall quarter is starting off with a series of Community Resource presentations. The public is invited to attend and hear about all of the services offered in the community.

Presentations will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Creekside Room. The presentation on September 24 will be in Room E-106. Here’s the lineup:

New fire preparedness tools unveiled by the City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another fire in California, but when and where cannot be predicted and is unknown - but what is known is there will be another community that is devastated by wildland fire.

Residents around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra know this all too well and have been talking about concerns of wildfire threats in and around the Tahoe Basin. Those conversations have turned into plans and the City of South Lake Tahoe has just released an interactive website to help both residents and visitors map out an evacuation plan based on their neighborhood.

Pollock Pines man facing 43 years in prison after found guilty of murdering six-week-old baby

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The man responsible for abusing a baby from the time he was eight days old and his death five weeks later is looking at spending the next 43 years in prison after being found guilty on March 21, 2019, in Judge Kenneth Melikian's courtroom.

Michael Swope, 32, was convicted of second-degree murder of baby Sammy as well as three counts of felony child abuse causing great bodily injury for breaking various ribs on the baby over infant's short and traumatic life.

Health assessment of South Lake Tahoe shows mental health and substance abuse at top of needs list

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A study on the health needs of the South Lake Tahoe community has once again put mental health and mental disorders at the top of the list, followed by substance abuse, and access to healthcare services.

Every three years Barton Health conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment to identity the key health issues facing the area. They use a systematic, data-driven process to determine the health status, concerns, and needs of residents in the South Tahoe community.

The 2018 results are a follow-up to similar studies completed in 2012 and 2015.

South Lake Tahoe daycare staff member arrested on child sexual assault charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After an investigation into an allegation of ongoing child sexual assault at a South Lake Tahoe daycare center, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) have arrested the father of the operator of Pequeños Rascals Daycare.

On June 15, SLTPD first received information about the possible assault occurring at the center located at 3336 Sandy Way. Multiple victims came forward and reported a pattern of abuse dating back at least two years.

Imprisoned South Lake Tahoe man to be arraigned on charges he killed his 3-week-old son

Murder charges have been filed against a South Lake Tahoe man, almost ten years after the death of his three-week old baby boy.

On November 14, 2008, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) arrived at a home after a call about a baby who was found unconscious. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived shortly after and transported the infant to the hospital where he was declared deceased. Both the baby's mother and father were present at the time police arrived.

Choices for Children seeking child care providers in South Lake Tahoe

If you are a parent looking for child care, you have probably encountered some challenges. There is currently a shortage of child care slots in El Dorado County. Many child care facilities who offer care are full and have waiting lists. This situation is very frustrating for parents and their employers. In order to work, parents are forced to juggle child care between friends, neighbors, and family members which can often be inconsistent and unreliable. Parents may also be forced to consider a child care situation of questionable quality.

South Lake Tahoe fire stations stocked with loaner life jackets

The use of life jackets saves lives, especially on Lake Tahoe where Cold Water Shock can kill a person in minutes.

It has been a deadly year on the lake, and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) department has started a new program to help save lives in the future.

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has partnered with SLTFR in making life jackets available to the public on a loan basis. They have infant, child and adult sizes.

New rules for those attending American Century Golf in Lake Tahoe

American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe is always a fun place to be during their week-long tournament, but fans need to know of some new policies that will be strictly enforced in 2017.

The tournament takes place at Edgewood Tahoe July 11-16, 2017.

There is no bag check or camera check area as in the past, so if attempting to enter and items you are carrying are not allowed they will have to be returned to motel room, vehicles or disposed of.

No backpacks or large purses. All bags are subject to search.

Serious crash near Kirkwood injures multiple people

5:00 p.m. update: Seven people were injured and transported to area hospitals Tuesday after a four-car crash in the "Ice Box" area on Highway 88.

Just after 1:00 p.m., a Toyota Highlander with three adults and three children inside was traveling westbound and, for reasons unknown at this time, went into a snowbank. A car following the Toyota then slammed into it.

A third car, a small, brand new Chevrolet, avoided the other two cars as they came upon the crash, but then ended up in a snowbank as well. The fourth car involved then ran into the Chevrolet.

Squaw Valley closes after fatal accident of ski patroller

2:00 p.m. update - Joe Zuiches, a 42 year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday morning, prior to regularly scheduled operations, during avalanche control activities at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley. The cause is believed to be the detonation of an explosive charge. An investigation is ongoing in cooperation with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and North Tahoe Fire Department.

LTUSD begins study into what Al Tahoe Elementary could look like in future

The conversation has started on what to do at the former site of Al Tahoe Elementary School after the passage of Proposition 51 in the November election which will create $9 billion in funding for the state's schools. During a study session at the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's (LTUSD) Board of Trustee meeting Tuesday, staff and trustees starting looking the future function of the school that closed in 2004 due to declining enrollment.

Man arrested in connection with death of El Dorado County infant

An investigation by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office into the death of a six-week-old infant has resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man.

Michael Swope is behind bars at the jail in Placerville and being held on one million dollars bail after his arrest on Thursday, December 29 at 3:20 p.m. on second-degree murder and assault charges.

The infant’s mother has been cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation and is not considered a suspect.

No other details have been released.

Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

You hear of the "great recession" causing issues in many areas from jobs and income to housing, but another victim is quality child care in South Lake Tahoe.

Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.

Two-vehicle injury crash closes Highway 50 at Echo Summit

5:15 p.m. update 10/3/16: A Carson City resident was transported to Barton Hospital after her Ford Bronco drifted into the oncoming traffic and crashed into a Jeep Wrangler.

Stephanie Peterson of Carson City was heading west on US50 near milepost marker 67 with her infant son in the car. According to the California Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation, she was also operating her cellular phone as she headed up Echo Summit in snowy conditions. She made an unsafe turning movement and allowed her Bronco to drift.

Heading east at the time was Jonathan Chacon of Mammoth Lakes.

Douglas County deputies looking for Walmart theft suspect

The public's assistance is being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as they try to identify a man who left the Walmart in Gardneville with items he didn't pay for.

Mental health and substance abuse top health concerns in South Lake Tahoe

The community has undergone a complete physical and the results are in. Based on the 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment, mental health and substance abuse remain top health concerns in the area.

Barton Health conducted its second Community Health Needs Assessment to identify unmet needs within the community. After identifying these needs, Barton will work with representatives from organizations who provide services for the medically underserved to offer recommendations and a collaborative action plan focused on positively impacting the community’s health.

South Tahoe High on lock down after 911 call about suicidal man with knife

A mentally disturbed man holding a knife to his own throat in an apartment near South Tahoe High Wednesday morning resulted in a temporary lockdown on the campus.

Just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning a 911 call came in and the School Resource Officer cautioned the high school to conduct a lockdown until police officers could arrive and assess the situation.

First degree murder charges filed in death of Douglas County infant

A 23-year old Carson Valley man is now facing first degree murder charges in the death of this two month old daughter Ava Getty.

The infant was brought into the Carson Valley Medical Center by her father, Trent Getty, on January 7 with serious injuries. According to Douglas County Sheriff's investigators, the infant died after suffering substantial injuries that were the result of traumatic abuse and inconsistent with the statement given by Getty regarding how the injury occurred.

Douglas County man arrested in child abuse case; Infant dies

1/10/15 11:45 a.m. update - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child abuse case involving a 2 month old infant.

On January 10, 2015 at 12:48 a.m., the two month old infant was taken off life support and died. The cause of death is pending autopsy.

Suspect Trent Getty was located in Sacramento, California at a Greyhound Bus Depot and was taken into custody by the Sacramento Police Department. Suspect Getty is in custody in the Sacramento County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Douglas County, Nevada.

Investigation continues.
