Marjorie Louise Daum ~ 1938 - 2020

Longtime South Lake Tahoe area resident Marjorie Louise Daum has entered the kingdom of God.

The well known local businesswoman was 82.

Marjorie was as a very kind and sweet person, always greeting everyone with a cheerful smile and a hug. Her strong courage, humility, honesty and faith guided her successful path through life.

She was born on February 24, 1938 and moved with her family to South Lake Tahoe in 1947 where they lived at the Al Tahoe Pines Resort. The family's marine service station was where the current Globin's building and Pick 6 are currently located.

Marjorie survived the infamous winter of ’52. Between Halloween '51 and New Year's Day'52, nine feet of snow had already fallen over the passes, but that was just an example of what that winter would hold for the residents. That first wee, 23 feet of snow fell on Donner Pass, shutting down the highway for over a month, and blocking train tracks. During a 2013 Lake Tahoe Historical Society panel, Marjorie shared her story of that winter:

The community really pulled together and helped each other out that winter. That evening she highlighted two of the more entertaining stories of the evening: The patient tied to a sled and the red Koolaid/Jello cross and arrow across the snow. A woman in the Bijou Pines area that Marjorie babysat for, Betty Hogan, had an appendicitis attack during the storm. Since there was no local doctor, residents went to her home, tied her to a toboggan and moved her to the shore where a seaplane came in to take her to a hospital. The heavy snow of the storm also caused the one push snow plow in town to break down. There were no parts locally so they arranged for an airplane to drop the needed supplies into town. The local men went to Patty Olsen's family store and picked up all of the red Kool-aid and Jello in stock and mixed them with water. They went out to the field at the site of the current Bijou Golf Course and made a huge arrow and cross out of the red liquid to lead the pilot to where to make the drop (the arrow to lead him in the right direct with all of that snow, and the red cross to mark a spot to drop).

Marjorie graduated South Tahoe High School in 1956. She married her loving husband Jerry in 1957. She was a founding member of the Barton Auxiliary in 1960 and her dedication made it possible for the hospital to open three years later. In 1965 she and her husband opened Tahoe Paradise Chevron in Meyers which has been in operation with her involvement for 55 years. She was a charter member of Soroptimist International SLT in 1970. In 1973 she was a member of the South Lake Tahoe Arctic Cat racing team, becoming the Western States Women’s Champion. Marjorie was also a longtime member of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, volunteering at annual events and elementary school tours through 2019.

Marjorie worked and played hard all of her life. She enjoyed social interaction, fishing, shooting, golf, vintage cars, snowmobiling and travel. She especially cherished and loved her surviving brother, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and son.

She had a strong passion and commitment to her family and community. Accordingly, she let go of her love for freedom and this country and passed on the Fourth of July. She was a angel in disguise and will be missed by all who knew her.
