Meyers traffic meeting to discuss possible right turn restrictions this winter

Event Date:
August 5, 2020 - 9:00am

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. Calif. - Traffic leaving South lake Tahoe through Meyers on Sundays and holidays through the winter can be a nightmare. Map apps lead visitors onto roads that are steeper and not plowed as much as US50, thus creating hazards and clogged roads. Tow trucks are backlogged hours to assist getting the stuck vehicles off Apache, Mandan, North Upper Truckee and Sawmill Roads.

Due to these jammed roads, residents in the area cannot to get to work or the grocery store, and a Traffic Advisory Committee was formed to seek solutions.

The Traffic Advisory Committee will hold its next meeting on Wednesday. August 5, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. using Zoom audio conferencing.

This meeting will be regarding the right turn restriction survey and planned pilot program at the intersections of US Hwy 50 at Sawmill Road and US Hwy 50 at North Upper Truckee Road on Sundays and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If drivers cannot turn right on these roads they would be forced to use the highway to make their way west toward Sacramento.

Resident and right turn restriction advocate Tony Risso is asking residents to join in the meeting so El Dorado County staff understands this proposal and the pilot project to test it this winter.

The pilot project is only intended to test two specific roadways (North Upper Truckee, and Saw Mill Road, on Sundays and state holidays between the hours of 10:00 A.M., and 4:00 P.M.). If the pilot project works as intended, both roadways will be removed from the navigation applications algorithms, thus not routing vehicles on either of these two roadways as an alternative to escape traffic congestion on westbound US50.

Risso says this pilot project will have an unintended consequence to other alternate roadways (Mandan, Oneidas, Apache, and Elks Club, etc.), creating a larger than usual traffic flow on high traffic days.

Advocates would like to see both right and left turn retrictions on other surface roads as well.
