Peaceful caravan from South Lake Tahoe to Minden BLM protest

Event Date:
August 8, 2020 - 11:00am

A group of area residents will be driving to Minden to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement on Saturday, August 8. Organizers are inviting everyone to caravan to the protest being held in Minden to protest Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley's comments made last week.

The peaceful and socially distant caravan will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Bijou Community Park, then head to the Sheriff's Office where they plan to drive by to show support. This car caravan protest is being conducted entirely in cars. It was designed this way to let everyone take part without being exposed to the coronavirus and is safe for youngsters and senior citizens "to peacefully show the government that changes need to be made."

The BLM protest is in response to Coverley's letter to the county library on their proposed diversity statement that said they support all people and beliefs and "#BlackLivesMatter." The Sheriff responded in a letter than ended with "Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help. I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior, since those are just some of the recent calls my office has assisted you with in the past."

The proposed diversity statement and the Sheriff's letter in their entirety can be read HERE.
