Walk or hike to end the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide

Join the Suicide Prevention Network in their efforts to end the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. Throughout the month of September, people are encouraged to get outside and walk or hike with friends and family, or on your own. Physical activity and spending time outdoors is good for our mental wellness so this is the perfect time to encourage and empower others to join this movement.

All monies raised benefit the prevention, education and outreach programs at Suicide Prevention Network.

How to Hike for Hope

Visit https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=78464 and sign up. Each individual who walks/hikes will record their miles and has an opportunity to win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place for overall miles hiked. If you are hiking as a team, the team will record the total number of miles that you hiked as a group. Teams are limited to a 6 person maximum. Please email us with your team name and participants.

Calculations for team miles work like this: Lisa hiked 72 miles, Morgan hiked 85 and Donna hiked 50. Your group total is 207 miles. You must record your miles on the Ultra Sign up website. If you do not have a fancy app that tracks your miles, the iphone and android have this feature built in, please see below for details. You may also use pen and paper and the honor system. To be fair, please only record your miles from the specific walks and hikes you do for this event. Please don’t record all the steps you take throughout the day just walking around your house or work.

Kids

This is a family friendly event and children are encouraged to participate! If you choose to log your child's miles, you must register them for the walk. However, shirts will only be available in size small-2xl. A small shirt will likely fit age 12 and up.

Swag

Participants will receive a Hike for Hope t-shirt, a Hike for Hope vinyl decal for your water bottle, an “I am hiking for ____” sign to personalize, and various swag from contributing agencies in a small reusable tote! Swag bags will be ready for pick up outside at the SLT Suicide Prevention Network office at Co-Work Tahoe or the Suicide Prevention Network Office in Minden. You will recieve an email mid August with more information on how to pick up your swag bag.

Prizes

The top three teams and the top three individuals will receive an special customized trophy and a variety of gift certificates from local businesses.

Social Media

We encourage you to take photos in your Hike for Hope tshirts and post on social media with the following tag: #hikeforhopespn #suicidepreventionmonth. You may also email us the images to post if you do not use social media, just let us know that you are ok with us sharing! We also encourage you to bring your sign to display in your photos to show the world who you are hiking for! (remember to leave no trace and pack out your garbage!)

How to track your miles with your iPhone or Android

Iphone:
Launch the “Health” application icon on your home screen. By default, the Dashboard will appear with the “Steps”, “Walking + Running Distance”, and “Flights Climbed” cards. You can tap the “Day”, “Week”, “Month”, and “Year” cards to see how many steps you’ve taken, how far you’ve walked and run, and how many flights of stairs you’ve climbed, complete with averages.

Android:
Launch the “Fit” app on your Android phone. You’ll have to set up Google Fit, including giving it access to the sensors it needs to monitor your step count. After you’ve done so, open the Google Fit app and swipe around to see how many steps you’ve taken and other fitness details.
