City history hunt wraps up Saturday; Historical Society launches new one

Now that history buffs have started the hunt with the City of South Lake Tahoe's week full of treasure, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society picks up the trail.

August 29 is the last day of the City's hunt. Maps can be picked up at any City facility including the Recreation Center, Explore Tahoe, the Campground by the Lake and Bijou Golf Course. The maps maps can also be downloaded. There will be a chance at prizes for those that complete the hunt.

The Historical Society has created a map of ten historical spots in the Al Tahoe neighborhood and will be adding new spots in the months to come. They want to make history hunting in South Lake Tahoe a unique way to enjoy the community and to join in on what is becoming a highlight for vacationers around the world.

See where the Washoe Indians had a ceremony site. See what is left of the first wagon train trail in town. Find tombstones from the 1800s, and see the spot where the hotel stood that Mark Twain spent time in the 1860s.

What is unique about this history hunt is the series of blue markers at each spot. They have QR codes so smart phones can scan them and a whole page of history at that location opens up.

All completed hunts turned into the museum win a prize and people are then entered into a monthly drawing. All monthly prizes can be mailed.

Maps can be picked up at the Museum located at 3058 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe as well as the Visitor Center just a few doors down. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays only.

The information can also be found on their website, www.laketahoemuseum.org and follow the trail to the hunt.
