Construction crews moving right along on SR28 road project

The first phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project along State Route 28 from Sand Harbor to Incline Village is now 25 percent completed.

Part of the completion includes a “shoofly,” a temporary lane detour around the existing road to keep traffic flow of one lane in each direction at Tunnel Creek

Upon completion the project will:

Include three plus miles of shared-use path from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor
Relocate and also organize shoulder-parking areas near Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café
Provide an undercrossing of SR 28 near Tunnel Creek
Provide safety improvements along the SR 28 corridor to include centerline rumble strips; emergency, operation, and maintenance turnouts; as well as erosion control/water quality improvements.

NDOT has contracted Granite Construction to implement the project by spring 2018.

The “shoofly” detour allows for crews to work efficiently during the day on the new sewer alignment and installation of the tunnel while keeping vehicles moving with one lane in each direction. The Tunnel Creek sewer/tunnel install is expected to be completed early October. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the “shoofly” as speeds will be reduced to 25 MPH.

Motorists should anticipate minor delays of approximately 5-15 minutes with one-lane flagger controlled closures Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. through mid-October. All lanes will be open during non-working hours.

With NDOT’s road construction goal to enhance driver safety on Lake Tahoe’s east shore, the motorists are reminded to anticipate minor travel delays leading into the Labor Day weekend. There will be periodic flagger controlled one-lane traffic throughout the day for short periods on Sept. 1 to get equipment, materials and trucks access to each location until 6:00 p.m. All lanes will be open with no construction over Labor Day weekend, Saturday, Sept. 3 – Monday, Sept. 5. The previous schedule will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Additional construction-related lane and road closures will take place over the next two summers as construction of the pathway continues through 2018.
