Official groundbreaking of Soroptimist Stadium - Home of Girls' Softball

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For years the members of Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) have planned for a major legacy project for the community. The club has saved a portion of its fundraising proceeds for over a decade while searching for a major project which suits its mission to empower women and youth. The result of that search broke ground Wednesday - the renovation of the softball field at the South Tahoe Middle School. The socially distant ceremony was held with club members and partners in their endeavor.

It has been more than 45 years since any improvements have been made to this softball field, with the prospect of change seeming unlikely for years to come, the Club said. The existing infield is rutted out, uneven, sinking in the center and its base layer no longer provides support. The existing poorly conditioned softball field is a liability to athletes for injuries during competitive play.

"The girls in this community deserve better," said club representatives.

SISLT has allocated $325,000 to renovate the softball field and provide amenities commensurate with the adjacent boys’ baseball field, with the aim to provide gender parity for the girls’ teams. More funds will be needed to complete the entire project and the club is seeking donations to help with additional phases.

They already received two cash donations, $1000 from Kelley Erosion Control and $1500 from Liberty Utilities. Western Nevada Supply provided a significant discount on the water filling station which Lake Tahoe Unified School District has volunteered to install. Turner & Associates discounted the site survey required during the planning phase and Design Workshop has donated several hours to the design of the project. South Tahoe Refuse is not charging the club for the disposal of the old fencing and backstop. In-kind contributions like those will help stretch available funds.

The middle school students use this field during physical education classes and it is also used for girls' fast-pitch softball games, by local recreational softball leagues and for tournaments which bring visitors to our community.

The improvements planned will better serve all those who use it.
