Lake Tahoe Marathon canceled for 2020

The 26th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon scheduled for October 9-11 has been canceled for 2020.

Due to the volume of participants and required bus transportation to starting points, the popular three-day event was canceled since gathering and social distancing protocols couldn't be met. The date for the event will be October 8-10, 2021.

Organizer Les Wright of South Lake Tahoe sent out the following letter to participants this week:

The odds of being able to have the 25th Lake Tahoe Marathon this year on Oct 9-11th have dropped to about 1%.

I spoke to the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Zoom at the end of their meeting in the Public Comment session this afternoon. No action can take place during this time, but the City Manager did say to me that the chance of the City opening up the Special Event permits was nil and the ban would probably be extended.

Waiting another two weeks to get the official bad news is not fair to you, my volunteers or me.

So this is the official word of our cancellation for this year.

As you know your registration will be automatically rolled over to next year.

The airlines will let you change your tickets if you are flying. You have time to cancel your hotel reservations as well.

Beside this set back, CA is on fire right now. Hopefully the fires will be over by Oct 9-11, but there is a good chance the Lake Tahoe Basin will still be smoky then as well.

I know several of you will come to Lake Tahoe anyway and will run. If I can help you with running on your own I will be glad to give you advice.

Meanwhile, wear your mask, social distance, and keep running when you can.

If any of you want to transfer your fee to Run Maui next January 17th, email me for special attention and a promo code to do so.

Hopefully we will be able to run MOM as scheduled.
