The Lake Tahoe Regional Plan and TRPA Win National Awards

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was recognized by the American Planning Association (APA) this week at the annual Western Planner Conference in Stateline, NV, with three awards for outstanding planning, TRPA announced today.

The new Lake Tahoe Regional Plan, adopted by TRPA in December of last year, won the 2013 Western Planner Sheldon D. Gerber Award for Excellence in Environmental Planning as well as the 2013 Nevada APA award for Outstanding Environmental Plan. TRPA Senior Planner Theresa Avance, AICP received the 2013 Professional Planner of the Year award from the Nevada APA.

“TRPA is honored by the recognition these awards bring to Lake Tahoe and we share the recognition with the thousands of people that invested their input and passion into the new Lake Tahoe Regional Plan,” TRPA Executive Director Joanne S. Marchetta said.

Lake Tahoe is often looked to as an area on the cutting edge of environmental planning, Marchetta said, and planning professionals from around the nation and the globe come to the alpine lake to learn how to achieve environmental restoration while supporting communities.

The Western Planner Conference, hosted this year by the Nevada Chapter of the APA, is a gathering of professional and citizen planners from 13 Western states to share knowledge and innovations in planning. Conference organizers included mobile workshops in the three-day conference to allow attendees to see and learn about the history and current challenges facing Lake Tahoe.
