School and Community Safety at the Forefront

It was just 3 minutes from the time a gun was shot today in Sparks, Nevada until the first police officer arrived at Sparks Middle School. In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.

This tragic school shooting sends a message into every home in South Lake Tahoe...are we safe and have we done all we can to make our community safe? South Tahoe Middle and High Schools were on heightened alert today, putting into practice what their training has taught them. So far this year, 4 of the 6 district schools have had specialized safety training and more training at all schools had already been scheduled before today's tragedy. Lake Tahoe School District also conducts safety drills for lockdowns, shelter-in-place, fires and evacuations. They city and local agencies also held an "Active Shooter Training" at South Tahoe High School this past summer. The school district's safety and security consultant also conducted a simulated lock down at South Tahoe High on October 9 which involved all local law enforcement agencies. Training and drills are important measures the schools have taken to act in the safest and best possible way should an unanticipated disaster, such as a shooting, occur. The school district has important information on their website for parents to read.
