Caltrans Highway 50 project in South Lake Tahoe done for season

One year down, two to go! Work has concluded for the season on a major Caltrans construction project in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Trout Creek.

Part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program -- a partnership of federal, state and local agencies, private interests and the Washoe Tribe created to protect and improve the natural and recreational resources of the Lake Tahoe Basin -- this three-year, $56.7 million project consists of building a new drainage system to treat stormwater runoff, rebuilding sidewalks, curbs and gutters, widening the highway shoulders to provide Class II bike lanes on both sides, and upgraded traffic signals.

It’s scheduled to be completed in fall 2019.

This season’s work started just east of the “Y” intersection with State Highway 89 and finished at Winnemucca Avenue. Next season the work will be from Winnemucca to Sierra Boulevard, and the “Y” intersection will be repaved.

Building season 2018 will also have a City of South Lake Tahoe on Sierra Boulevard and another Caltrans project in Meyers at the intersection of SR-89 and Highway 50.
