Homeless coalition completes purchase of three South Lake Tahoe motels; move-ins begin
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2021 - 10:37amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Governor Newsom announced the state would be giving the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) almost $10 million, the local nonprofit quickly bought three motels to meet its goal of ending homelessness in South Lake Tahoe. The September announcement of the Project Homekey grant came with an end-of-the-year deadline so California communities would get the ball rolling on sheltering the chronic homeless.
Western Nevada College Dean's List announced

The WNC Fall 2020 Dean’s List includes 408 students, accounting for 34.7 percent of the college’s full-time students.
To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Detectives are currently working the case and asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspect. The suspect’s race or gender are unknown but they were wearing a grey hoodie, black pants and high-top sneakers, standing at approximately 6 feet tall.

Last week, Luca Genasci made an announcement on social media that he would be discontinuing his campaign. Citing a growing workload with a new business opening, Genasci said did not have "ample time" to dedicate to his new fiancé, family, friends, businesses and local politics.
Genasci owns Lake Tahoe Aleworx with two locations at Stateline and the Y, and a new bar, the Cocktail Corner, next door to the Y location in The Crossing at Tahoe Valley.
Construction temporarily stopped on South Lake Tahoe Greenway trail due to material delay

COVID-19 resulted in delayed delivery of materials for the precast concrete boardwalk system needed on the trail. The Houston, Texas concrete plant contracted for the project has been directly impacted.

The partnership of Related California and St. Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has been selected to build the community's first modular multi-family housing development. They are naming it Sugar Pine Village.
Man wanted by US Marshals arrested in South Lake Tahoe after pursuit

Matthew Core, a 38-year-old man from the Sacramento area had been in federal custody in the Sacramento jail when he was released due to COVID-19, then went on the run according to SLTPD Detective Sgt. Travis Cabral.

South Lake Tahoe teen arrested after allegedly stealing truck

The 2008 Toyota Tacoma was parked overnight and when the owners woke up they say the truck was missing. According to their neighbor's security camera, the truck was taken at 3:30 a.m.
Caltrans wrapping up $52.9M South Lake Tahoe project

Tallac in the background, little did she know she would become a much-needed respite in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
She posted that photo on the I Love Lake Tahoe page, gathering hundreds of "likes" and several comments about what her next drink would be. A new fan suggested a Lemon Drop would look nice on the balcony, and so it began.
Work underway on Al Tahoe Safety and Mobility Project in South Lake Tahoe

After a restriping/lane change pilot project in 2017 that reconfigured two of the four vehicle travel lanes and added buffered bike lanes on Al Tahoe Blvd., the rest of the project has now begun. The project has been years in the making through the planning, funding, public input, and permitting stages.

Hope Lutheran Church to offer free sack lunches to the community

Homeless and anyone in need of a meal are invited to stop by the church on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to receive a free sack lunch. The church is located at 930 Julie Lane at the Y, just past Jim Bagan Toyota.
Semi-truck rollover at the Y in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/06/2020 - 3:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A semi-truck heading from Oakland, California to Dayton, Nevada rolled over at the Y in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning.
At 11:04 a.m., South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Rescue Departments responded to the intersection of US50 and Emerald Bay Road to a call of a tractor-trailer rollover.
According to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver of the semi was heading northbound on Emerald Bay Road when he took the right turn to go east on US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard at a faster speed than the turn allows.
Bank of America in South Lake Tahoe closed this week due to staffing issues

A Bank of America representative, Colleen Haggerty, the SVP of media relations, told South Tahoe Now the bank plans on reopening Monday, April 27.
Construction of new phases of South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail underway
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/22/2020 - 11:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work has begun on two phases of the 3.86-mile long South Tahoe Greenway Shared-Use Trail (Greenway) that will connect Sierra Boulevard in Tahoe Sierra Tract to the Van Sickle Bi-State Park near Stateline in South Lake Tahoe.
The project was approved in 2011 and 2016 and will provide users with a safe way to travel by non-motorized means off of the highway through the heart of South Lake Tahoe. The whole length will include neighborhood connectors and the ability to join the popular trail from the Y to past Baldwin Beach.

Woman beaten and robbed of groceries and wallet in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/17/2020 - 11:23amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 57-year-old woman from South Lake Tahoe was attacked and robbed Saturday, March 14 around 9:00 p.m. as she was walking home from grocery shopping. The victim was walking toward Tata Lane from Raley's at the Y when attacked in the meadow behind the grocery store and Alpine Liquor.
An unidentified male threw her to the ground and hit the woman, causing serious injuries. She remains hospitalized Tuesday in the Intensive Care Unit.
The man took her groceries and wallet.
South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler says goodbye; March retirement date set

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.

To address the shortage of housing for Californians, Governor Newsom ordered the Department of General Services (DGS) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to identify and prioritize excess state-owned property and aggressively pursue sustainable, innovative, cost-effective housing projects.
The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe sold for $14.8M

Winning $14M lottery ticket sold at Raley's at the Y in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/19/2020 - 6:03pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Someone is $14 million richer after buying a Super Lotto Plus ticket at Raley's at the Y in South Lake Tahoe.
On Saturday night, six numbers were drawn by the California Lottery, and only one ticket matched all of them.
The lucky numbers were 6-7-20-27-42 and the mega-number 12.
A spokesperson at the SLT Raley's said they don't know who the lucky winner is and most likely won't know more until the three-day weekend is over.
Two people matched five numbers and won $17,513 each. The odds of matching all five plus the Mega number was 1 in 41,416,353.
Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation and AleWorx team up to raise $20,000

Moose Lodge 9th annual Food Drive fills boxes with holiday dinners

For nine years the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 1632 has supplied the boxes of supplies for Christmas dinner for local families in need, including a ham!

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/12/2019 - 7:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Approximately 50 community members attended Wednesday's community meeting about the current housing crisis in South Lake Tahoe, and possible solutions through using California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) asset lands near the "Y".
The DTC was joined by state and local partner agencies in discussing how their "asset lands" at 1860 Lake Tahoe Boulevard and 1029 Tata Lane could support sustainable development consistent with local planning. Both properties are subject to the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Tahoe Valley Area Plan.

Just in the definition, there is so much meaning for not only this day but for every day. As the Thanksgiving turkey, potatoes and stuffing are heaped onto dinner plates, thank yous are given for the ability to have the meal with family and friends. Thanksgiving reminds us to give thanks and to count our blessings. We are blessed and lucky to enjoy life, and we must remember that every day of our life.
