Winter weather advisory in effect until Sunday afternoon for Lake Tahoe

Expect a windy and snowy weekend in South Lake Tahoe! Ski resorts on the South Shore had to postpone opening days, so maybe Mother Nature will be helping them out!

There is a wind advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe in advance of the winter storm headed our way. Expect winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph overnight Friday, increasing Saturday to 20-30 mph and gusts to 55 mph. Ridgetop winds could gust up to 110 mph. Waves on the lake are expected to be 2-5' with the highest on the north and east shore.

The winds subside slightly as a winter storm moves in.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm advisory for the mountains surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 p.m. Saturday through 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

Snow accumulations above the 7000 ft level are forecast to be 8-16", with lighter accumulations of 2-6" possible down to 6500 ft. Lake level could see up to 2".

Snow levels will be near lake level Saturday afternoon, rising to 7000 feet by evening. Snow levels will lower again to lake level by Sunday evening.

Travel conditions over the Sierra may be hazardous at time due to slick, snow packed roads both over the passes and around lake level. Expect chain conditions.
