New mayor and end of plastic bag ban on SLT City Council agenda Monday

Event Date:
December 7, 2015 - 9:00am

Hal Cole's term as mayor during the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary is coming to a close. During the next City Council meeting on Monday, December 7, the next mayor and mayor pro-tem will be elected. All current council members are eligible though first term Councilwoman Wendy David is the current mayor pro-tem.

Normally held on Tuesdays, the Council meeting was moved to Monday so Tom Davis could attend his daughter-in-law's graduation from nursing school in Tennessee. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the airport.

A topic that many thought was over is now back on the agenda at the request of Mayor Cole. The banning of plastic bags is now in the second stage and affecting retail businesses and the council wants to eliminate the ban for non-grocery stores. This is the first reading and the public wishing to have a say should plan on coming to address the issue.

Also on the agenda:

Caltrans will be on hand to present the next major project for Highway 50 through South Lake Tahoe. Planned from 2017-19, the section of the highway from the Y to Trout Creek Bridge will get a new stop light at Lodi Avenue, synchronized traffic lights, a turn lane from the road onto Tahoe Keys Blvd and a new turn lane from Sierra Blvd onto the highway. New curbs and gutters will be added to the sides of the road as well as the addition of new sidewalks and wider bike lanes and storm filtration systems. They have also planned bus turnout lanes. It has been suggested that business owners along Highway 50 start taking part in the public outreach meetings so they can plan for interrupted access for three summers. In the planning stage since 2005, the project is expected to cost $56.7M.

The Tahoe Transportation District will present their revamped Loop Road project to the council. It will be the same presentation they made to the public at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel this week.

In order to complete the bike trail from El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd, the City needs to use eminent domain for acquisition of needed property from a few owners.
