Chance for more rain and snow this week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Winter Weather Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin expires at 4:00 a.m. Monday with most of the precipitation winding down by then other than a few lingering showers through 10:00 a.m. It`s unlikely to be snowing for the Monday morning commute, however, roads may still have snow and ice present.

Ridging will build back over the west Tuesday, with inversions present and high clouds streaming over the area. Ridge quickly flattens by Wednesday as the next storm system approaches the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The wetter and farther south solutions with this storm continue with the bulk of ensemble guidance hinting at 1-2 inches of liquid at the Sierra
crest. The trajectory of the system would make it favorable for spillover into western Nevada with wetting rains and even a period of light snow possible. Snow levels would keep the mountains all snow, with a mix of rain snow possible for elevations below 6000 feet as snow levels fall Thursday. This would obviously bring periods of travel difficulty in the Sierra and possibly western Nevada as well. The storm would also bring an increase in wind speeds, however, nothing looks too extreme.

There will be another break Friday into Saturday before an atmospheric river streams into the Pacific Northwest Saturday night into Sunday. While the center of the moisture is aimed toward the mouth of the Columbia River, the trend with increased moisture transport has been south. At this point, it doesn`t appear to be a direct hit for the Sierra, but has the potential to bring another round of rain and snow to the region.
