Nevada Highway Patrol personnel to be awarded medals for actions during IHOP shooting

By Chuck Allen / Nevada Highway Patrol
Several personnel from the Nevada Highway Patrol will each be awarded a Commendation Medal this Friday for their timely, professional and outstanding performance they displayed on the morning of September 6th, in Carson City.

Shortly before 9:00 am that morning, the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Communications Center began receiving information of an active shooter near the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant on South Carson Street.

As the flow of information regarding this tragic and unimaginable event was being received and disseminated to the troopers and supervisors in the area, each dispatcher at the center displayed a sense of calm while maintaining a high degree of professionalism.

Three troopers, a sergeant and a lieutenant immediately responded to the scene and were the initial uniformed personnel who assisted the Carson City Sheriff’s Office with a variety of duties. Some took charge of closing a section of US 395 near the incident in an effort to land 3 medical helicopters while others helped to establish and control the traumatic scene while tending to the wounded victims.

Additional personnel from our agency who responded assisted the deputies set up a larger perimeter area from the restaurant in the event there were one or more additional perpetrators attempting to flee the area.

Each of the following will be receiving a Commendation Medal that will be presented on Friday, December 16th, 2011, at 1:00 pm by DPS Director Chris Perry and NHP Chief Bernie Curtis.
