Winter Weather Advisory up for Lake Tahoe: Winds and 2-4" forecast for lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for Sunday, December 16.

It all starts with the wind advisory in place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Winds will be from the south-southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. This will result in waves on Lake Tahoe from 2 to 4 feet, the highest ones along northern shore. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Then, starting at 6:00 p.m. and lasting until Monday at 10:00 a.m., the Winter Weather Advisory is in place. Snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches mainly west of Highway 89 above 7000 feet with up to 15 inches on the crest. 2 to 4 inches possible around lake level.

Travel could be very difficult across the Sierra passes. Strong winds could produce tree damage and possible power outages.

This storm front is moving quickly and Monday has a 40 percent chance of snow showers before 10:00 a.m., making way for partly sunny skies and a high of 40.
