Lake Tahoe area ski and weather news: The Mountain Resort Report©

Good morning skiers and riders, and if you are visiting, welcome to Lake Tahoe!

Today is February 16.

A WET & WILD DAY AS A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS POSTED! STRONG WINDS ARE AFFECTING THE OPERATION OF UPPER MOUNTAIN LIFTS AT: HEAVENLY, MT ROSE, SIERRA AT TAHOE, KIRKWOOD, SQUAW, ALPINE, SUGAR BOWL, MAMMOTH… DONNER SKI RANCH CLOSED

ALL ROADWAYS IN AROUND LAKE TAHOE HAVE R1 OR R2 CHAIN CONTROLS.

TODAY’S WEATHER (NWS GREATER LAKE TAHOE AREA): Rain and snow in the morning, then showers in the afternoon. Snow level 6500 lowering to lake level. Snow accumulation up to 3 inches…with 4 to 10 inches above 6500. Highs: 40F to 45F. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Ridge gusts up to 120 mph.

TONIGHT: Mostly Cloudy with a slight chance of snow showers in the evening, then partly cloudy after midnight. Lows: 20F to 25F. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Gusts up to 45 mph in the evening. Ridge gusts up to 75 mph in the evening.

FRIDAY: Chance of snow in the morning, then snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulation 1 to 5 inches. Highs: 33F to 38F. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Ridge gusts up to 50 mph increasing to 85 mph in the afternoon.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT:
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST THIS AFTERNOON…
Timing: Snow, or a rain and snow mix below 7500 feet early this morning will continue through early this afternoon. The rain and snow below 7500 feet is expected to turn to all snow by late morning.
Snow Accumulations: 4 to 10 inches above 6500 feet, highest along and west of highway 89. Below 6500 feet, up to 3 inches.
Snow Levels: around 7500 feet early this morning falling to near 6000 feet by late morning.
Winds: South to southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Sierra ridge gusts up to 120 mph.
Lake Tahoe waves: 2 to 4 feet…highest from mid lake to north and east shores.
Impacts: Watch for rapidly worsening conditions this morning with travel delays and chain controls over passes. Slushy roads are possible at lake level during periods of heavier snow. Dangerous boating conditions for small boats on Lake Tahoe. A few trees or tree limbs could fall, possibly causing power outages.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination. If traveling in a high profile vehicle, be prepared for strong gusty winds, especially Thursday morning.
Active Weather Pattern Continues…
A series of storms will impact the region today through the middle of next week. The strongest storm in the series will impact the Sierra and western Nevada late Sunday night through Tuesday.
Strong gusty winds will continue in the Sierra and Sierra Front Range this morning through this afternoon. Expect snow and rapidly worsening conditions in the Sierra this morning with possible travel delays and chain controls over passes.
Friday will bring another round of mountain snow and valley rain. There will be a break Saturday afternoon through Sunday before a much stronger storm arrives late Sunday night and lasts into Tuesday. The system for early next week will bring significant precipitation amounts. Snow levels remain uncertain and will greatly affect the potential for runoff and flooding, especially for northeast California and the northern Sierra.
With very wet antecedent conditions in lower elevations and exceptionally deep snowpack at higher elevations, even small amounts of precipitation could create renewed flooding concerns. The main flooding concerns will continue to be along smaller streams, areas of poor drainage, and main stem rivers in northeast California such as the Pit, Susan and Middle Fork Feather, which have already seen flooding this past week.
Our recommendation is to utilize the quieter periods to clear snow, mud and debris from storm drains and poor drainage areas, and to keep flood mitigation measures in place through next week.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress in layers with your Gore-Tex Jacket or outer Shell. Take a hat or beanie and wear a Helmet for Safety. Also wear Good Goggles with orange or rose tinted lenses, and warm water proof lined gloves. Don’t forget to use Sunscreen & Chapstick when the sun is out and Stay Hydrated at altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are Wet Machine Groomed & Skier-Rider Packed Wet Snow with some areas of Firm Packed snow on Southern Exposures.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Do Not Duck Rope Closure Lines! Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Do not Ski or Ride above your ability level… Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting down hill. If you go off-piste, always ski & ride with a buddy!
